Sean Dyche has admitted he has been ‘very pleased’ with James Garner this season.

Speaking in his pre-match press conference, the Everton boss heaped praise on the midfielder.

James Garner arrived at Goodison Park from Manchester United last summer, but failed to immediately kickstart his career on Merseyside.

The 22-year-old had to wait a month to make his debut in a defeat to the Red Devils, before he suffered a back injury that kept him out of action for three months.

Garner thrived under the arrival of Dyche, who brought him into the team in defence following Seamus Coleman’s absence.

Garner’s versatility has come in very handy to the former Burnley manager, who has played him both out wide and centrally this season. Though it has been his performances in his natural position that have especially impressed fans so far.

The midfielder won’t have wanted the international break at all after a stellar few weeks, netting his first Everton goal in the Carabao Cup win over Aston Villa, before bagging his first in the Premier League against Bournemouth.

Dyche clearly has very high hopes for Garner and admitted he is a ‘very good’ player.

Speaking to the media, Dyche said: “His adaptability is very pleasing. He is a player that can use that wisely – and he does. He is growing into what he is, and that is a very good player.”

An important asset

Everton have struggled with squad depth for a while now and no longer have the funds to boost it, so James Garner’s ability to play all over the pitch is massive for the Toffees.

However, the England U21 international could certainly become an extremely important player at Goodison Park in the future, if he is able to continue playing in the centre of midfield.

Garner has arguably been Everton’s best player in the opening few months and, while many have tipped Dominic Calvert-Lewin to keep them up, it could well be the United academy graduate that proves to be the difference come the end of the campaign.
