Everton have been better than Manchester City in one particular area in the Premier League this season.

According to X user ‘The xG Philosophy’, the Toffees have racked up a higher xG (16.43) this season than the defending Premier League champions (15.66).

This means that Sean Dyche’s side have been expected to score more goals, based on a statistical measurement of the quality of their goalscoring chances and the likelihood of them being scored.

This can be based on a variety of factors such as the assist, angle and distance of the shot and whether the ball was struck with the foot or the head.

While it doesn’t mirror the amount of goals Everton have actually scored, this is an incredibly surprising stat considering Man City’s attacking prowess.

Pep Guardiola’s side have narrowly missed out on netting 100 goals in the Premier League over the last two seasons, however they clearly haven’t been as much of a threat this time round – while Everton apparently have.

Everton’s major problem last season was their frontline but things have looked a lot better for them in attack following the returns of the likes of Dominic Calvert-Lewin, Jack Harrison and Dwight McNeil.

The Merseyside outfit have now scored nine goals in the Premier League this time out, though they have all come in the last five games.

They have also produced 133 shots and 44 shots on target, as well as being provided with 21 big chances. This compares similarly to Man City, who have taken 131 shots, 54 shots on target and have had 17 big chances.

While there is no denying Man City are the much better team, it is a huge turnaround for Everton who have been struggling in front of goal since the days of Romelu Lukaku.

It’s a huge positive for Sean Dyche to take and it is clear that what he is trying to do is working, while it now appears they just need to work on other areas of the pitch.

If they put more of the chances way then who knows where they could end up?
