Everton play host to Liverpool on Wednesday night in what will be the final Merseyside derby at Goodison Park.

It’s set to be an emotional but vociferous atmosphere at Goodison, with Everton desperate to sign off with a victory.

Jarrad Branthwaite has issued a rallying call to his teammates ahead of the crunch clash, urging them to be on it in training this week.

It will be Arne Slot’s first taste of the fierce rival and he’s been doing the relevant preparation to make sure he and his side are ready.

In fact, in today’s press conference, Slot revealed that he’d watched back last season’s game and pointed out something quite bizarre.

Arne Slot points out that the referee favoured Everton in last meeting

Speaking to the media on Tuesday morning, Liverpool boss Arne Slot pointed out that the referee favoured Everton in the last meeting between the pair.

“I’ve seen the game of last season and I think we were quite ready because after 10 minutes the referee blew his whistle 11 times and 10 times in favour of Everton, so the Liverpool players were ready to compete but every time they touched them it was a free kick.”

The Dutchman also touched on how passionate the Goodison faithful are but insisted his players are ready for the intense atmosphere.

“It’s always a fantastic atmosphere, the home supporters are there to support their team and the away fans are mostly loud as well.”

Everton vs Liverpool: Last five meetings

Everton currently hold the bragging rights after defeating Liverpool 2-0 at Goodison in their last meeting, but how do they fare across the last five fixtures?

ScorelineDate
Everton 2-0 Liverpool24/04/24
Liverpool 2-0 Everton21/10/23
Liverpool 2-0 Everton13/02/23
Everton 0-0 Liverpool03/09/22
Liverpool 2-0 Everton23/04/22

Remarkably, four of the last five games have all ended up being 2-0 scorelines, so it’ll be interesting to see if that trend continues tomorrow night.

Everton haven’t got the greatest record against the Reds in recent times, however, they’re perhaps in the best form they’ve been in for years.

So it’s certainly set up to be a cracking game for the neutral.
