The five best players who Everton nearly signed recently includes ‘rapid’ winger and £37m Liverpool star

Everton have been famed for their poor recruitment under Farhad Moshiri’s rule, but realistically, it has not been all bad.

After all, the main grievance that comes with his torturous reign relates to the fees spent rather than the players brought in, with Kevin Thelwell having reduced their failure list remarkably well.

In fact, just before his arrival, and ever since, the kind of target they have focused on has been in stark contrast to those who they chased after in the years before.

It’s a testament to their recruitment that these upcoming five players, all who nearly joined the club, are now mostly thriving in new environments, snapped up with little hesitation.

Everton failed to sign Yankuba Minteh this summer

The latest of these failures was when Everton tried to sign Yankuba Minteh from Newcastle United.

Once again hamstrung by financial restrictions, it was thought that they had snuck in a workaround when Dominic Calvert-Lewin seemed poised to go in the opposite direction.

Alas, a deal could not be struck between the forward and the Magpies, and the move collapsed. The Gambian trickster has since moved to Brighton and Hove Albion, where he is already shining with the pace and skill that the Toffees crave.

Everton once bid for Conor Gallagher

Arguably one of the strangest sagas on this list includes Conor Gallagher, the former Chelsea man who now plies his trade for Atletico Madrid.

The England international has impressed for his boyhood club ever since he broke into the first team, always brimming with energy and attacking intent.

So, it seemed like a match made in heaven when Everton bid £45m to sign Gallagher just days after Anthony Gordon had left for Newcastle United for the same fee.

In the end, a move did not materialise, and the 24-year-old is now set to star in Spain instead.

Everton wanted Ismaila Sarr last year

Another winger who has now joined a Premier League rival, Everton’s interest in Ismaila Sarr has been remarkably longstanding.

Described as a ‘rapid’ threat by former Liverpool winger Sadio Mane, every summer the Senegal international was linked to Goodison Park, and yet every summer nothing ever came of it.

It was thought that his 2023 move to Marseille would finally quell those rumours as he once again ignored Everton’s interest, but they still persisted, until finally Crystal Palace got their man this very summer.

Like Minteh, his raw speed would be richly welcomed in Sean Dyche‘s current squad.

Everton nearly signed Liverpool winger Luis Diaz

Arguably the biggest frustration of the bunch was Everton’s failure to sign Luis Diaz from FC Porto, only for the Colombian to eventually join their Merseyside rivals just six months later.

Said to have seen Goodison Park as his ‘priority’ move by Fabrizio Romano, this came during the dark era under Rafael Benitez, during his conquest to remove James Rodriguez from the club too.

Frustratingly, his conjoined switch back to Portugal could not be completed, and the Diaz deal escaped them.

He has since been shining at Anfield ever since his £37m move.

Everton would have signed Mohammed Kudus if not for Manchester United

It might seem odd to shift the blame for Everton’s failure to sign Mohammed Kudus onto Manchester United, but that is simply the case.

After all, were it not for their late and desperate acquisition of Antony, handing Ajax £82m in the summer of 2022, it was expected that the Ghanaian winger would have made his move to Goodison Park.

Personal terms were agreed, and they were closing in on a completed deal. That was, until Kudus then became indispensable, and West Ham United swooped the following summer.
