The real reason why Dominic Calvert-Lewin will not sign a new contract at Everton

There was always bound to be a little bit of hardship for Everton supporters to endure, given how swimmingly their summer had been going beforehand.

After all, having only shipped out fringe players to adhere to PSR, which has in turn allowed them to add three new players to their first team, the fanbase has been left stunned.

Seemingly, Kevin Thelwell has forged an environment where no longer can the Toffees be bullied due to their precarious financial position.

So, with Manchester United still after Jarrad Branthwaite, they have thus far stood firm.

And yet, despite all that, one sale might now be sadly forced through by the player himself.

Dominic Calvert-Lewin snubs Everton contract

The latest on the future of Dominic Calvert-Lewin comes courtesy of The Times, who actually sought to offer an update on Branthwaite initially.

Detailing the latest bid from the Red Devils, it was the end of their report which provides a greater insight into the thoughts behind the striker’s lack of contract developments.

His current deal expires next summer, leaving Sean Dyche unsure whether to sell him now or lose him for nothing in a year.

Many might question why this hulking marksman, who has been at Goodison Park for eight years now, would be so desperate to leave for free.

This report has sought to explain it: ‘While Thelwell and the manager, Sean Dyche, ideally want to keep Branthwaite, there is an acceptance that the future of Dominic Calvert-Lewin is more complicated. The 27-year-old has entered the final year of his contract and Everton are loath to let him leave on a free transfer next season.

‘Calvert-Lewin is not minded to sign a new deal while there is uncertainty at the top of the club, with the Friedkin Group doing due diligence after being granted exclusivity by the owner, Farhad Moshiri, to buy his shareholding. A takeover is not considered to be a formality, with due diligence offering the American group plenty to consider.’

Trouble with Dan Friedkin’s Everton takeover?

Whilst the sale of Calvert-Lewin would certainly mark a blow, there is a far more worrying line within this claim.

After all, the suggestion that Dan Friedkin’s takeover is somehow not a formality, and that the finances of the club could scupper their interest, is terrifying.

Evertonians have stuck with this club through the darkest of times under Farhad Moshiri, with the Iranian billionaire the figurehead who has regressed the club to within an inch of its life.

And yet, his desperation to sell to 777 Partners indicated he was desperate to deliver that final, killer blow.

But in Friedkin, a brighter future was instantly promised.

Hugely rich and already boasting knowledge of how to run a successful football operation, it seemed like a light at the end of the tunnel had been reached.

If this falls through, the club will once again be plunged into real peril.
