Everton will be looking to emulate their triumph in 2021 on Wednesday night as they make the short trip to Anfield.

The Merseyside Derby returns to the Premier League, and it will take a lot to top the final derby at Goodison Park back in February.

James Tarkowski’s goal sent the Gwladys Street into bedlam, and Arne Slot and Liverpool will be out for revenge.

Slot gestured his frustration to the Everton fans last time and no doubt David Moyes will be hoping for the same.

Well, Moyes might be looking into the performance of Carlo Ancelotti’s Everton team when they won 2-0 at Anfield for the first time since 1999.

Jamie Carragher on why Everton beat Liverpool in 2021

Ancelotti dropped a masterclass in the 20/21 season, albeit with no crowds, but the Toffees still made history.

Richarlison’s opener set Everton on the path to success, which no doubt left Jurgen Klopp baffled, but it ultimately sums up Ancelotti’s genius.

That’s what Jamie Carragher thought at least as he claimed the win was all down to the former Everton boss.

Speaking on Monday Night Football in 2021, Carragher said, “Everton’s man of the match was Carlo Ancelotti.”

“Notoriously, Everton’s record at Anfield is horrendous; to actually win is huge.

“The reason why Ancelotti won that game is that he took the emotion out of the game.

“Emotionally, the derby is the biggest game for Everton fans.”

Moyes should use Ancelotti’s plan for Everton vs Liverpool

In the game, Ancelotti made some bold choices with his lineup.

The likes of Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Allan were absent when they could’ve played, but had only just returned from injury.

This is a strong message to Moyes in saying don’t chuck players in the deep end, an example of this is Iliman Ndiaye who is returning from injury.

Another is Dwight McNeil, who has teased a return, but Moyes can’t give in to temptation and stick with what’s been working.

It’s a difficult one to call on Wednesday, but with Liverpool stumbling in recent weeks, Everton can strike like Ancelotti once did.
