Everton fans have always been known for being some of the most passionate supporters in the country, creating some of the best songs and atmosphere.

Whether it be at Goodison Park or a long away trip down to the south coast midweek, they always turn up in their thousands and give it their all.

Over the years, the Toffees have compiled a songbook full of incredible chants, which a number of the players have complimented throughout the season.

So, we’re looking at the 10 best Everton chants – old and new – sung on the terraces over the years.

10 – Never Felt More Like Singing the Blues

Lyrics: “I’ve never felt more like singing the Blues, When Everton win and Liverpool lose, Oh, Everton, you’ve got me singing the Blues…”

A nice and easy one to get started with that’s always a feel-good song when Everton is winning/have won and Liverpool is losing/has lost.

It’s a chant sung by many clubs up and down the country, but there’s something about the Everton version that makes it all the more sweeter.

9 – 60 Grand 60 Grand Seamus Coleman

“60 Grand, 60 Grand Seamus Coleman. 60 Grand, 60 Grand I say. 60 Grand, 60 Grand Seamus Coleman. Playing football the Everton Way!”

Seamus Coleman is an Everton legend suffice to say and it’s only right that legends get a great football chant.

The song refers to the transfer fee the Toffees paid to sign the Republic of Ireland international in 2009.

Coleman has made over 400 appearances for the club and while his role may have been reduced somewhat in recent years, he is still a fan favourite and any chance to belt this song out is a good one.

8 – It’s a Grand Old Team to Play for

Lyrics:Hail, Hail, The Everton are here, What the hell do we care, What the hell do we care, Hail, Hail, The Everton are here, What the hell do we care now …For its a Grand Old Team to play for, For its a Grand Old team to see and if you know the history, It’s enough to make your heart go Woooooooaaaaaaarrrrrrr!!! We don’t care what the REDS**** say, What the f*** do we care, For we all know, That there’s going to be a show, When the Everton boys are there!”

We’ve removed the x-rated part of the chant from the song but this is one of the more famous chants sung by fans on the terraces.

Often sung by supporters just before kick-off and shortly after full-time, this one gets everyone off of their seats.

Other clubs such as Celtic and Tottenham Hotspur have their versions, but this one is the best.

7 – Iliman Ndiaye Chant

Lyrics: “I am in love, I can’t deny, our number 10 his name is Iliman Ndiaye; from Senegal to Bramley Moore, he’s f*****g magic he’s one that we adore. Ole ole ola!”

A recent addition following Iliman Ndiaye’s arrival this season, but it’s too good not to include.

Ndiaye has been impressive this season and at the time of writing is the club’s top goalscorer after returning to the Premier League following his brief spell in France.

The forward also approves of the chant, with his wife recently sharing a video of the 24-year-old listening along after the win away at Ipswich Town.

6 – Forever Everton

Lyrics (excerpt): “We’re the kings of Goodison, We play in Royal Blue, On the ball the Toffeemen, will play it sweet for you, we play it on the carpet, we play it in the air, whichever way we play it, we play it fair and square Everton, Everton, we’re Forever Everton, all for one, one for all, Everton’s the team that plays beautiful football…”

This is a chant that splits some of the Everton fanbase.

Written by Graham Gouldman, an English songwriter known for his time as bassist and co-lead singer for Stockport-born British rock band 10cc.

Gouldman is a Manchester City fan, born in Salford, so some Toffees fans want to claim no affiliation with the musician.

But, despite the strong feelings, the song is often played before games and sung by supporters.

5 – Z-Cars

Okay, I know what you’re thinking: ‘This song has no lyrics’…

That doesn’t take away its importance at Everton. For home supporters and the visiting away fans, a trip to Goodison isn’t the same without hearing the iconic theme song.

Z-Cars was a British Police drama that ran between 1962 and 1978 and according to several stories, one of the actors was an Evertonian who brought along some of his fellow cast members to watch a game.

In recent years an air raid siren has been added to the walkout, which can be rather intimidating for opposition players.

4 – Banks of the Royal Blue Mersey

Lyrics: “Oh, we hate Bill Shankly and we hate St John, but most of all we hate Big Ron and we’ll **** the Kopites one by one on the banks of the Royal Blue Mersey, To Hell with Liverpool and Rangers too, ***** **** *** in the Mersey and we’ll fight fight fight, with all our might for the boys in the Royal Blue Jersey.”

Once again we’ve had to blur out some of the words and exclude some from the song due to the nature of them, but this is a very popular song among supporters.

The origins of the chant are relatively unknown, but given the hate towards Liverpool and Rangers in the song, it’s clear to see what the Toffees are referring to.

3 – We are the Goodison Gang

Lyrics: “Marching down the Goodison Road, all the windows open wide, when you hear a copper shout ‘hey, put that candle out’, we are the Goodison Gang. We’ve got no manners, we spend all our tanners, we are respected wherever we may go. Marching down the Goodison Road, all the windows open wide. When you hear a copper shout ‘hey, put that candle out.’ We are the Goodison guys.”

A song fit for intimidating any opponent, it’s a chant that has taken on various adaptations over the years.

The song appeared on the BBC in 1968 in a docuseries called The Golden Vision in 1968, which followed the life of Everton supporter Ken Loach.

2 – Here We Go

Lyrics: “Here we go, here we go, here we go. Everton is the best we all know. We’re the team, we’re supreme, number one and we love you, Everton! Here we go, here we go, here we go. Side by side as we sing along together, E-V-E-R-T-O-N We’re Everton and we’ll be Everton forever. Everton forever, we are on our way together. Getting stronger every day, we are winners all the way. Here we go, here we go, here we go. Everton is the best we all know. We’re the team, we’re supreme, number one and we love you, Everton!”

One of the most iconic chants to grace the Goodison stands, this song does have some big history associated with the club.

A recorded version of this chant was sung by the players, who appeared on Top of the Pops in 1985 ahead of their FA Cup final against Manchester United.

Sadly it wasn’t enough to take them to victory, but the song was released as a hit single and is always sung loud and proud by fans.

1 – Spirit of the Blues

Lyrics: “It’s good news for the Blues and there’s no more time to lose, cos we’re hot on the trail, and there’s no way we’re gonna fail, so get your coat on and get moving, cos we don’t know the meaning of losing, so come on come on, get down to Goodison Park, Wooooo. Everton, we never shone so brightly, Everton, the spirit of the blues, Everton, we never shone so brightly, Everton, the spirit of the blues.”

And here we have it, the number one Everton song.

That moment it hits the ‘wooooo’ is one that is even difficult for opposition fans to resist from singing aloud.

Spirit of the Blues was released in 1985 after Everton completed a First Division title and European Cup Winners’ Cup double and after the appointment of Carlo Ancelotti in 2020, fans managed to get the song to place at 65 in the UK charts.

It even became the UK’s most downloaded tune in one of the weeks and this song can be heard regularly throughout the 90 minutes.
