Three reasons why Everton should keep David Moyes amid Andoni Iraola talk

David Moyes has had his critics among Everton fans.

Some of the Everton fanbase think David Moyes is too negative at times, and his team selections can baffle many.

David Moyes’ treatment of the likes of Tyler Dibling, Adam Aznou, Tyrique George and Braiden Graham, to some extent, has led many to question whether he is the right man to take this club forward.

Toffees supporters feel he may be too reliant on the old guard, and a more progressive manager may be better suited to take the next step into Europe.

There have been calls for the Toffees to appoint Andoni Iraola, who has announced he’s leaving Bournemouth at the end of the season.

However, here are three reasons why the Friedkin Group would be wise to keep Moyes and offer him a new contract, with his current deal expiring next year.

Look what happened to West Ham United

West Ham thought the grass was going to be greener without Moyes and it’s been anything but since the Scotsman left in 2024.

The Hammers were immediately thrown into a relegation battle last year, and now it looks like they’ll be heading to the Championship this term.

The Friedkins will be well aware of that risk, and so it’s a key reason why Moyes should stay and extend his future on Merseyside.

Another summer transfer window could be transformative

Moyes has another summer transfer window on the horizon, only his second since returning, to add more quality and depth to the Everton squad.

The American investors are expected to back Everton with a £100m net spend, so the Toffees should continue to improve next season.

If that were to be the case, then they’d probably finish in the top seven, as they’re only four points adrift as it stands.

Moyes has credit in the bank

Ultimately, Moyes has more than enough credit in the bank to retain his job at Everton, so it’d be hugely controversial to sack him.

Since rejoining Everton in January 2025, the Toffees have picked up the joint eighth-most points in the Premier League.

The Scotsman is a blue through and through, and his commitment to making the club successful is unparalleled.

Tony Bellew admitted he was stunned by Moyes’ work ethic recently.

“I’m at that club five days a week because my son is in the academy and when I’m coming out at 8pm on weekday nights, they’re still in there, him (Moyes) and his staff.

“8pm on a Tuesday night, they’re still in the training ground! They’re all there still working. They’re still there grafting, working.

“They’re one of the hardest working teams I’ve seen at Finch Farm and let me tell you, I’ve seen quite a few come and go over the years.”
