Victor Anichebe sends message to Ben Godfrey as former Everton star joins Ipswich on loan

Former Everton defender Ben Godfrey has officially completed a loan move to Ipswich Town.

Godfrey left Everton in the summer after a four-year spell at Goodison Park, after he joined the club from Norwich City.

Godfrey would make a move to Serie A club Atalanta, linking up with another former Evertonian Ademola Lookman.

But the move hasn’t really worked out for Godfrey, as he has made just five appearances under Gian Piero Gasperini.

It had been claimed a few weeks ahead of the January transfer window that Godfrey would likely leave Atalanta on loan in order to go and play regular minutes.

And he’s now back in the Premier League.

Godfrey was present today at Craven Cottage to watch his new club Ipswich in action against Fulham.

The Tractor Boys drew 2-2 with the Cottagers, in a result that was almost much worse for Everton.

Everton are now just one point ahead of 18th-placed Ipswich in the Premier League table, and the two clubs look like they’ll both be in a relegation battle come the end of the season.

But Ipswich will hope that their signing of Godfrey will help them at the back.

The Tractor Boys announced their new signing after their draw with Fulham, with Godfrey taking to social media to send a message to fans. He wrote: “Buzzin to be joining @ipswichtown on loan for the rest of the season.. excited for the new chapter and challenge. Let’s go 💪🏽🔵 thanks as always @neweraglobalsports.”

Former Toffees striker Victor Anichebe was among those to comment, saying to Godfrey: “All the best bro 🔥.”

Ipswich have conceded 35 goals so far this season – only four clubs have shipped more so far.

Everton will hope that Godfrey doesn’t have too big of an impact at Ipswich, but perhaps one big enough to tempt them into buying him this summer.

Because Everton hold a sell-on clause over Godfrey, which will net The Friedkin Group a small windfall.

A chance to get back on track for Godfrey

Everton fans will likely be paying a little more attention to what Ipswich are doing now that Godfrey has joined them for the second half of their campaign.

It’s a good chance for him to get his career back on track after his struggles at Atalanta.

Ultimately, Godfrey knows the Premier League and will be looking to break into Ipswich’s side and make an immediate impact.

It will be a little while until Godfrey potentially makes his first appearance against Everton, with the two teams meeting at Goodison Park on May 3. Very possible, that will be a huge game for both sides.
