Seamus Coleman made his final appearance at Hill Dickinson Stadium yesterday, and Wayne Rooney is the latest big name to pay tribute on social media.

The Toffees came up way short against the Black Cats, ending their home campaign in disappointing fashion.

The 3-1 loss has now led to a lot more criticism for David Moyes, who stands accused of making chances too late again, as well as failing to push his team on from a winning position.

How do you even sum that up? 😡

Coleman was given some minutes at the end, and unfortunately it wasn’t the cameo he would have been hoping for.

After the game, Coleman was given a guard of honour by his teammates, but the stadium had largely emptied which was disappointing.

But the player has at least been sent a nice message today by Wayne Rooney.

The tributes poured in thick and fast for Coleman after the announcement on Friday.

So many past and present players moved to talk about Coleman’s service as an Everton player and today, Wayne Rooney has shown his love for the Irishman.

Writing on Instagram, he said: “Brilliant to catch up with a few generations of Blues and be there for Seamus Coleman’s last game.

“An @everton legend and an even better person 💙👏🏼”

It has been a running theme for people to mention Coleman the human being, as well as the great player that he’s been.

There have been many turbulent times over the years, but Coleman has always been there, showing leadership and driving standards even when he hasn’t been playing due to injury.

It now remains to be seen what Coleman’s next move will be.

Alan Stubbs has urged Coleman not to rush into a coaching role at Everton, and believes he’s earned the right to do whatever he wants.

Moyes has said he’s offered him all kinds of roles so far, in an attempt to keep him in a non-playing capacity.

Hopefully he’ll stick around, but whatever he does, it’ll be with the blessing of Evertonians far and wide.
