Everton fans want to see the club’s transfer window spring into life after a slow start – and tonight the club have made a big announcement.

The Toffees have not had the blistering start that many had hoped for this summer, although that was perhaps never likely.

A high number of players were always going to be turned over, and that has taken priority.

But Everton will hopefully be able to start focusing on incomings now, with Thierno Barry likely to be announced as a new signing soon.

Carlos Alcaraz has also turned his move to the club permanent after a successful loan spell.

Last week, Michael Keane signed a new contract with Everton.

That came after Dominic Calvert-Lewin chose to leave Everton, having been in talks.

That left just one other player – Idrissa Gana Gueye – that fans were waiting to hear a decision about – and that decision has now come.

Gueye had previously hinted that he wanted to continue at Everton, but some had started to worry that he wouldn’t extend.

Everton apparently only wanted to hand Gueye a one-year contract, but the player was said to have wanted two.

And it appears a compromise was reached, in the form of a one-year deal plus an option for another year for Gueye.

Earlier this evening, Everton announced Gueye has indeed signed a one-year contract, with journalist Alan Myers confirming that there is an option to extend by a further year.

This news has left many Evertonians very happy.

@kingkhan225: “Genuinely the best news of the summer so far for Everton and it’s a testament to how incredibly important @IGanaGueye is to Everton Football Club. One of the best midfielders in the PL last season and such an incredible ambassador for the club. Needed to see him play at BMD!”

@Aliencupcake67: “That’s it I’ve seen enough, we’re winning the lot.”

@HutchTweeting: “He could play for Everton until he’s 87, and he’d still be brilliant.”

@KieranJ1979: “Really good news and a sensible deal too with the option to extend rather than being locked in until he’s 38! Now need to either develop how we play or find someone younger who does what he does.”

@talkingtoffees: “Another important player tied down, very good news Now we finally have clarity on the contract front, let’s start building the squad.”

@HFOTC1878: “Smart business, boss player. Get the new signings sorted now blues.”

@efckyle_: “This is the best Monday ever.”

David Moyes react as Gueye signs new Everton contract

Everton fans can now breathe a sigh of relief.

Gueye is here to stay, and the tough-tackling ace may even stick around for two more years.

It is a smart move from Everton to have Gueye on a one-plus-one-year contract, rather than a straight two years. It means the club are not locked into him and can move him on if needs be.

Although fans will not bet against him playing at a high level for another couple of years.

As part of the announcement earlier tonight, Everton published some comments from David Moyes about Gueye, with the Scot saying: “We are delighted Idrissa has re-signed. His experience and his knowledge of the Club is going to be so important going forward with the introduction of lots of new players and the new stadium.

“Idrissa will play a big part in integrating everybody.”
