What the English media are saying after Jordan Pickford’s display in 5-0 win vs Republic of Ireland

Jordan Pickford is widely regarded as Everton’s best player nowadays.

Pickford has rescued The Toffees a number of points already this term with his acrobatic saves, most notably against West Ham United just before the international break.

Even Julen Lopetegui was blown away by Pickford’s performance during the goalless draw at the London Stadium.

The Everton shot-stopper has continued that form into an England shirt and largely impressed against Greece last week.

Pickford started against Republic of Ireland last night and here’s how the English media reacted to his performance.

National media react to Jordan Pickford’s performance vs Republic of Ireland

England defeated the Republic of Ireland 5-0 at Wembley last night as they made their one-man advantage count in the second half.

Pickford kept another clean sheet and was a safe pair of hands when called upon. Here’s what the papers had to say about his performance.

The Express wrote.

“A series of fantastic saves all night, including one to deny Liverpool left-back Kostas Tsimikas in the first half. An even better stop second half to deny Fotis Ioannidis after perfectly timing his move off his line. Booked (for the first time ever in an England shirt on his 72nd cap).”

Daily Mail said.

7.5/10 – “Back in team after Greece horror show last month and responded with strong showing. Two huge saves at 1-0 and played sweeper-keeper role perfectly.”

The Guardian added.

6/10 – “Unlikely to have a quieter evening. Ireland did not manage a shot until it was 4-0.”

Pickford stats vs Republic of Ireland

Whilst Pickford was largely quiet during the Wembley clash, he did have to make two key saves as evinced by his Sofascore statistics.

The Everton man was accomplished at building out from the back, too, completing 13 of his 15 passes on the evening.

He will now return to Merseyside ahead of an incredibly tough run of fixtures leading up until the new year.
