Why Beto now deserves a new Everton contract as striker scores again

Beto was on target again for Everton in the 2-2 draw with Crystal Palace – and there is now a strong case to hand the striker a new contract.

Beto notched his ninth Premier League goal of the season for the Toffees on Sunday, giving Everton the lead at Selhurst Park in the second-half.

Should Everton actually be getting Beto tied down to a new contract? 🤔

He'll only have a year left this summer…

He collected a ball forward from James Tarkowski, before taking the ball away from Maxence Lacroix and finishing between Dean Henderson’s legs.

It was a goal of high quality, and it was rather a shame that it wasn’t a winner for Everton.

While the result was frustrating, it was another good day at the office for Beto, who has surely now done enough to warrant an offer of a new contract from the Everton hierarchy.

Beto needs and deserves a new contract from Everton

His current deal expires in the summer of 2027 so that gives Everton a decision to make this summer.

The club won’t want him entering into the final year of his contract, because he will quickly lose value.

The other option is to sell, but Beto has been proving in 2025/26 that that would now be unwise.

We all know that he’s not prolific, but Beto is worth keeping around because he is clearly capable of producing goalscoring purple patches.

Nine Premier League goals (and 10 across all competitions) is good going to say he’s not always started, and he could well bag more in the final games against Sunderland and Tottenham Hotspur.

Ultimately, while he can frustrate sometimes with wayward finishing, he is the kind of player needed in a squad.

It has been said constantly how hard Beto works in training, and how he is always looking to improve various aspects of his game.

David Moyes has regularly spoken about his desire and work ethic, which really does appear second to none.

The fans also adore him for this reason. Grafting for the badge will always earn a player affection in these parts, and Beto has done that since the day he walked through the door.

On his day, Beto is just a real handful for any Premier League defender.

He is also capable of genuinely quality finishes.

The way he took his goal against Chelsea when James Garner played him in was exquisite. As was the way he worked the space to score against Palace on Sunday.

It does appear that he’s improving in front of goal, which is really promising to see. It’s all about getting more consistent now.

But even without that consistency, it does not make sense to cash in on Beto for all that he brings.

Everton should still look at signing a new striker this summer, but also hand their Guinea-Bissau number nine a new deal.

Beto wants to stay

Beto has already said he wants to stay at Everton beyond the summer. He said in April: “The future… Do I want to stay in Everton or not? Of course, I am here – I am home.

“When the time comes that I am no longer wanted here, I understand because this is football, and I will not be mad, because I understand football and how this works.

“Perhaps it’s my destiny to stay with Everton and if it’s not my destiny, I will still always love Everton.”

He’s called Everton his ‘home’ and says he’ll ‘always love Everton’ after he departs.

That is a further sign that this player deserves an extension.

You can tell he genuinely loves being here and wants to give his all for that badge, and in an era when loyalty is nowhere near as common as it used to be, there is so much to be said for that.
