Why Hayden Hackney and Tyrique George deals are reasons for major Everton optimism

Everton’s transfer window has sprung into life with Tyrique George set to complete a permanent move to the club after the official signing of Hayden Hackney earlier this week.

Toffees fans were still on a bit of a downer just a couple of weeks ago, following the club’s terrible finish to the 2025/26 season.

What is your message to Hayden Hackney after he inks his contract with Everton? 👋

Welcome to Merseyside, Hayden! 🤩

But Everton have now woken up in the transfer window.

Hayden Hackney officially signed on Thursday, joining from Middlesbrough in a deal worth up to £25 million.

And he’s set to be followed by George this coming week, with a £24 million deal in place.

And Evertonians ought to be very enthused, with the details of these transfers now coming to light.

Everton have been shrewd operators with Hackney and George deals

A lot of money was spent last summer in The Friedkin Group’s first major window.

And in all honesty, only a couple of the signings made were successful.

And it seems as though that window has been a bit of a learning curve if these two deals for Hackney and George are anything to go by.

Put simply, Everton recruitment officials deserve credit here.

It’s a combined £49 million for Hackney and George, but the structure of the deals means Everton should now have more freedom and wiggle room when it comes to signing other targets this summer.

Fans were growing a little frustrated with the Hackney deal as it was perceived that Everton were being stubborn and trying to lowball Middlesbrough.

But they were just negotiating, and now they will only pay an initial £16.5 million, with add-ons relating to European football and England involvement.

The initial fee for George will only be £18 million, so that’s £14.5 million that is being spread – and it’s not even guaranteed that that money will definitely come out.

It just shows a bit of savviness, which is to be welcomed during an era where it is so important to spend mindfully. During the previous regime, we saw cash splashed without much fear of the potential ramifications.

There is still a lot to do this summer with a number of positions needing attention.

But the first two have been done well, and that is reason to be optimistic for the rest of the window. Potentially, that £14 million deferment could be the difference between Everton signing a top target and not signing a top target.
