Why Tyrique George could regularly play a different position for Everton in 26/27

Everton fans remain hopeful that Tyrique George will return as a permanent player – and it’s possible he could be used in a different position next term given a new claim yesterday.

Everton remain in talks with Chelsea to sign George, with the club looking to try and sign him for less than the buy option they had.

It is thought Everton had the chance to buy George for £25 million after his loan.

It’s unclear if that option has now passed, but that now seems irrelevant as Everton feel there’s potential to land him for a lower fee, given he lacked minutes last term.

We saw George mainly play on the left side during his loan.

But it could be that he plays on the right if he seals a return to Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Following the injury to Jack Grealish, George was signed by Everton and when he played, he generally operated in Grealish’s position.

Iliman Ndiaye shifted over to the right at times. However, when Dwight McNeil started, Ndiaye played on the left and George was on the bench.

Yesterday, an interesting transfer claim was made.

Everton are now interested in Japan international Keito Nakamura, who produced a string of good performances at the World Cup before the nation’s exit against Brazil in the Round of 32.

That could well be significant, because Nakamura predominantly plays from the left.

He’s quite versatile and can also do a job through the middle as a striker. But by and large in his career, he has played on the left side, where he likes to cut inside on his strong right foot.

If Everton brought him in, that may prevent George playing on that side, especially with Iliman Ndiaye being an option too.

And then there’s also Jack Grealish, who almost exclusively plays from the left. Everton want to bring the winger back for 2026/27.

So that would be three options for the left side.

And that could point to a position switch for the youngster if he came back.

Dwight McNeil is expected to move on this summer after almost leaving the club in January for Crystal Palace.

So that may present him with some opportunities.

But of course, it remains to be seen if Everton can indeed bring George back as a permanent player, with the clubs currently talking.

The suggestion is that George is open to it, so hopefully we do see him return and shine if he plays from the right side.
