Everton have a massive chance to get their season going in the Hill Dickinson Stadium’s opener against Brighton.
After a frustrating defeat to Leeds United at Elland Road, David Moyes seemed disappointed.
The first half performance didn’t offer any of what was seen at the back end of last season, and improvement is needed.
Moyes has found the transfer window ‘difficult’ and it’s proving more and more likely that deadline day business could be in the frame.
The Toffees need to seriously improve on their matchday one performance, and what impressed Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler is exactly what Everton are missing.
Brighton boss Fabian Hurzeler was shocked by Everton’s intensity and speed last season
There were already differences spotted from the Blues’ resurgence last season compared to the first matchday, as it was certainly alarming.
| Possession % | 46% |
| Expected goals (xG) | 0.80 |
| Big chances | 1 |
| xG open play | 0.05 |
| Touches in opposition box | 14 |
Although it’s early days, Everton still want three more players, and those three additions could prove to be a massive difference.
Brighton presents a tough test, but Hurzeler knows that the Toffees could switch it on at any moment, and that’s what he noticed on his Premier League debut as a manager last season.
“The first 20 minutes I suffered on the sidelines, I was like ‘wow, that’s intense in the Premier League,” Hurzler said in the pre-match press conference.
“I remember Everton started the game really good. I was impressed with the intensity and speed of the game.”
There has to be a stark contrast from the Leeds game, as there was really only one player who brought the energy to the Toffees.

Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall is the key to Everton’s energy this season
There weren’t many positives to take from the loss in West Yorkshire, but it was once again another promising showing from Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall.
The Blues certainly lost the midfield battle, but Dewsbury-Hall covered the most distance vs Leeds and looked a class above when off the ball.
| Distance covered | 11.0km |
| Running % | 7.6km (69%) |
| Number of sprints | 9 |
| Ground duels won | 5/7 |
This is where Everton are going to rediscover their spark and bring back the energy that Hurzeler is talking about.
Idrissa Gana Gueye is another who can identify what is missing, as it’s almost guaranteed that Gueye working with the new recruit in midfield is a recipe for success.
