Everton are on the lookout for a new central midfielder.
There are doubts over Idrissa Gueye as the Senegal international sees his contract expire at the end of this season.
The fact Everton have already moved to tie Michael Keane down to a new deal – and are set to keep Vitalii Mykolenko on too – suggests Gueye could well be off.
AC Milan No.19 Youssouf Fofana is one option Everton are considering to bolster the midfield department – although The Friedkin Group may have to persuade David Moyes after the Glaswegian rejected the Frenchman at West Ham.
What would you do with Idrissa Gana Gueye this summer? 😬
He's got a one-year extension clause in his deal…
David Moyes turned Youssouf Fofana down in 2023
At that moment in time, West Ham had just sold Declan Rice to Arsenal in a £105m deal, and were on the hunt for a replacement.
The Guardian said that Fofana was a player under serious consideration, but Moyes preferred to focus on those with Premier League experience, and ultimately sealed a £30m deal for James Ward-Prowse.
The France international then made a €25m (£22m) move from Monaco to AC Milan in August 2024, where he has performed well and remained on the radar of Premier League clubs, such as Everton.
That deal for Ward-Prowse worked out miserably for West Ham, with the Hammers shipping the England international out on loan to Nottingham Forest and then Burnley, where he has suffered relegation this season and looks set to leave this summer for a fraction of the £30m spent on his services.
Perhaps that will show Moyes Premier League experience is not the most important thing to consider, and that he should be more open to Fofana this time around.
How would you have the side lined up if you were David Moyes? 🤩
Let's hope Beto is ready to go on Monday! 🤕
However, with Everton already largely being linked to Premier League regulars such as Ben White and John Stones, we have our doubts that the 63-year-old will change his ways.
