Beto continued his resurgence at Everton as he scored in last night’s pulsating 2-2 draw with Liverpool – and the striker has now made some interesting remarks.

Everton took a point against their bitter rivals in the final Merseyside Derby ever to be played at Goodison Park.

James Tarkowski popped up at the death to equalise, after Liverpool had turned the game on its head through Alexis Mac Allister and Mo Salah.

Everton had not deserved to lose the game. And the strike from Tarkowski understandably prompted scenes of absolute bedlam.

It was a memorable evening, and one that saw many Everton players perform admirably.

One such player was Beto, who opened the scoring for the Toffees after a great free-kick by Jarrad Branthwaite.

And ahead of the game, some interesting quotes from the star emerged regarding all the speculation about his future.

In January, and the weeks preceding the transfer window, there was a lot of speculation about Beto’s future.

He had not featured a great deal under Sean Dyche, and it was reported Torino were keen to sign Beto in January.

And there was further talk when Beto was pictured with a fan at Manchester airport. But the player has now explained the truth behind that photo.

The striker ended up staying put, and is now the main striker for Everton after Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Armando Broja both picked up injuries.

And Beto points to the arrival of David Moyes as a reason he did not depart, suggesting there was a chance he could have gone had Dyche remained at the helm.

He said (quotes published by Everton’s official website): “It’s crazy. I took one photo with a fan and suddenly everything became, ‘Beto is going to Turin, Beto is going to Turin’, and it wasn’t true. It’s okay, rumours are part of football, but for me, I kept it really simple and stayed really focused on being ready.

“Before we changed the manager, I will admit there was a possibility of leaving but even that can get confused. It was never a case of I want to leave – I didn’t want to leave Everton, it was a case that I just need to play. It is a situation a lot of football players face.

“Then the Brighton game, with the injury situation, it all changed. The Club would need to replace more players and it becomes a big snowball. I knew going into the Leicester game that the market was basically closed and I would stay. I was happy with that because it’s what I wanted – I want to stay and I want to play.”

Beto’s fortunes could now change at Everton

It’s interesting to hear Beto speak about the speculation around him in January and hear how close he really was to leaving.

Seemingly, there was a very real possibility that Beto could have left the club.

The suggestion that he was not happy at Goodison when Dyche was in charge and that is understandable. He really should have played a lot more given the clear struggles of Calvert-Lewin.

Goals – 11
Assists – 2

Thankfully a managerial change did happen, and Moyes looks to be very good for Beto, who lavishes more praise on the Scot in his interview.

Last week, Beto insisted Moyes had given him fresh confidence, and that was clear to see against Liverpool.

Beto hasn’t lived up to expectations at Everton since he signed from Udinese, but some feel Dyche never gave him a fair shot.

Now, with Moyes back at the club, his fortunes could really change. Beto is a player fans really want to see do well given how much succeeding here means to him, and now is his moment to kick on.
