David Moyes has completely changed the fortunes around Everton since returning to the club for a second spell.

Everton have gone from a relegation battle to looking up towards mid-table, as they now reside 15 points clear of the bottom three.

Moyes has been able to implement a much more attacking brand of football and it seems like he’s really building something.

Moyes wants more power to recruit his own players this summer and the Friedkin Group are mulling over whether to allow him to almost be the sporting director, in essence.

So, with that said, let’s take a look at his track record in recruitment with his last five Everton signings.

5) Kevin Mirallas (Olympiacos to Everton)

Moyes’ fifth to last signing at Everton was actually Kevin Mirallas, who joined in a £6m transfer from Greek side Olympiacos.

Mirallas became a fan favourite at Goodison Park and went on to register a very commendable 69 goal involvements in 186 outings.

The Belgian winger was last at AEL Limassol in Cyprus before hanging up his boots in September 2023.

Mirallas now works at Union Saint-Gilloise as a forward coach.

4) Matty Kennedy (Kilmarnock to Everton)

Everton signed Matty Kennedy from Moyes’ native country Scotland back in August 2012.

Kennedy arrived from Kilmarnock as an exciting teenage winger but he failed to make an impact on Merseyside as he never actually played for the senior team.

Now 30, he’s back at Kilmarnock having forged a respectable career in English football with the likes of Cardiff City and Plymouth Argyle.

3) Bryan Oviedo (Copenhagen to Everton)

Moyes pushed through the deal to sign Bryan Oviedo from Copenhagen the summer before he left for Manchester United.

The attacking left-back had a decent career for the Toffees and worked with Moyes for a second spell at Sunderland.

Oviedo now plies his trade in his home country Costa Rica with LD Alajuelense.

2) Thomas Hitzlsperger (free transfer)

Thomas Hitzlsperger joined the Toffees on a free transfer upon the expiry of his contract with Bundesliga side Wolfsburg.

Hitzlsperger, who was capped 52 times by Germany, made just nine appearances for the club before retiring at the end of the season.

The now 42-year-old is currently a board member at Serie A club Hellas Verona.

1) John Stones (Barnsley to Everton)

And, last but not least, Moyes’ final signing at Everton was actually John Stones, who was perhaps the most successful.

It quickly became apparent that Stones was going to achieve lofty heights in the game as he was extremely comfortable on the ball.

When Pep Guardiola made the switch to Manchester City in 2016, he quickly signed the England international for a whopping £50m.

Stones still plies his trade for Man City and has won countless Premier League titles, domestic cups and even the Champions League.

Brilliant talent identification from Moyes.
