David Moyes played a major part at Everton in his first tenure but he also contributed when he wasn’t even at the club.

Moyes has seen a decline at Everton since he rejoined the club after 11 and a half years and it comes as no surprise they are enduring their fourth relegation battle in a row.

Everton had a lot of success in the 2000s under former chairman, Bill Kenwright as Kevin Thelwell said Kenwright was ‘one in a million’.

That he was, as Moyes endured a brilliant first spell with the Toffees under the chairmanship of the late Kenwright.

Now he’ll need to try and replicate it, but Moyes had already told Kenwright something that has contributed to a rare Everton success story nowadays.

David Moyes told Bill Kenwright to sign Jordan Pickford in 2017

Moyes wasn’t only a great Everton manager whilst at the club but he also gave Kenwright great assistance with the signing of Jordan Pickford.

Of course, the former Everton chair took his advice and Pickford has been a brilliant player at Everton and recently made his 300th appearance in Everton’s 1-0 defeat to Aston Villa.

In Moyes’ pre-match press conference on Friday, the Everton boss was asked about what Pickford means to Everton (12:07), and Moyes hindered to a conversation he had with Kenwright.

“I think I gave Jordan (Pickford) his debut. I said to Bill Kenwright, you should sign this goalkeeper, he’s so good,” Moyes said.

“That meant that Jordan signed for Everton – I’m really looking forward to working with him again, it’s great that he’s got 300 appearances for this club because it’s a great privilege to do that.”

Moyes said Pickford was one of the ‘brightest’ prospects in England

Pickford is of interest to Bayern Munich as Moyes will try his best to make sure he stays at Everton for the foreseeable.

The Everton boss has always been an admirer of the goalkeeper and even made a bold claim about the no.1 in 2016.

Moyes was full of praise for Pickford in a pre-match press conference in December 2016, after the keeper suffered an injury for Sunderland ahead of their fixture against Burnley.

“We’re looking at six to eight weeks. It’s a major disappointment to us and more importantly for the boy. He’s been saving us points recently,” Moyes said.

“Jordan has been one of the brightest young prospects in England right now. I know there’s been a batch of very good players coming through but I saw Jordan as one of the best ones.”

Moyes did Everton a solid deal when he had that chat with Kenwright and it’s paid off dividends.

Now, Moyes and Pickford work together again, as they aim to help guide Everton away from their first-ever relegation from the Premier League.
