On a week when it emerged that Everton were struggling to convert big chances, Idrissa Gueye summed the issue up vs Spurs.

Everton picked up a massive point in their Premier League quest for survival on Saturday as a late Jarrad Branthwaite goal secured a 2-2 draw.

Sean Dyche‘s side were very impressive both in attack and defence as they in many ways outplayed Spurs.

Everton impressively boasted an expected goal tally of 2.62 which battered Spurs’ 0.98 xG. This came through Everton’s 14 shots but doesn’t take into account the situation a player could’ve created with a pass rather than shooting.

This was the case in the 44th minute when the impressive Idrissa Gueye left much of Goodison Park frustrated.

Idrissa Gueye summed up Everton’s big chance squandering

In the 44th minute of Saturday’s game against Spurs, Everton were presented with a huge opportunity. Gueye was leading the charge toward the Spurs goal with a 3-on-2 situation and open attackers on either side of him which could’ve handed Everton a probable chance.

This however was squandered with Gueye dragging a poor shot at least 10 metres wide of the goal. Such a massive opportunity could’ve been the difference between one point and three.

This issue of not taking their chances isn’t a new one for Everton though, as we reported earlier this week that Everton were the biggest xG underperformer within Europe’s top five leagues.

This an annoying trend which continued on Saturday against Spurs much to the frustration of the Toffees fans.

Everton were poor in front of goal against Tottenham

Against Spurs, while Everton will see the point as one gained, really in truth missed out on two additional points when the entire game’s performance is taken into account.

Everton had four big chances in the game, compared with Spurs’ one and of these four, Dyche’s side missed two according to SofaScore.

The home side also had double the shots inside the box compared with their opponents and really should’ve made Ange Postecoglou’s side pay.

It’s a frustrating trend which Everton haven’t been able to shake lately but they’re going to have to in order to push on and escape the relegation zone once more.
