Everton break unwanted 40-year record after West Ham United defeat

Everton suffered a 3-1 defeat to West Ham United at Goodison Park on Saturday broke a record that stood for 40 years.

Having missed several golden chances yesterday, including a penalty, Sean Dyche was left rueing at the full-time whistle.

With Luton suffering their 16th defeat of the season to Aston Villa in the evening kick-off, victory for The Toffees would’ve had them eight points clear of the drop zone and with significant breathing room.

But, ultimately it was a day of disappointment for the Goodison Park faithful and one that saw a 40-year record end, rather worryingly.

Everton have now extended their winless run in the Premier League to 10 games and it leaves them perilously close to the bottom three.

The Merseysiders haven’t won a league game in 2024 and their last three points came on December 16, when they secured a 2-0 away victory at Turf Moor.

It is now the biggest top-flight winless run Everton have been on since 1984, as per X account Everton Extra.

Prior to Saturday’s defeat, Everton have been pretty watertight in defence, though, it is up front where they have come up unstuck on several occasions this season.

Their profligate nature has been a massive factor in their winless run and yesterday only cemented that notion.

Sean Dyche must find a winning formula

The Toffees boss must find a way to get his side back into the win column.

It’s been pretty evident that their summer recruitment was a disaster, with £25m signing Beto misfiring and Youssef Chermitti barely getting a look in.

Perhaps Everton could benefit from a change of shape to facilitate a more attacking style that produces more chances.

Admittedly they created more than enough to win the game yesterday, but even with that said, had they carved out a few more, at least one or two more goals would’ve been scored simply due to probability.

To combat his side’s wastefulness in front of goal, Dyche should consider putting an extra body up front to support his lone striker.

Whether that be the inclusion of academy star Lewis Dobbin or the aforementioned Chermiti, either way, something needs to change.

Perhaps their under-21 top scorer Francis Okoronkwo should be given a chance. The 19-year-old would certainly be a wildcard selection for Dyche, but given their current run of form, it’s surely worth a go.

The Toffees signed Okoronkwo from Sunderland for £1m in 2021 and he’s netted 19 times for the under-18s and 21s since arriving on Merseyside.
