Everton could now make a U-turn over future of hardly-seen £112k-a-week player

Everton have been tipped to make a U-turn over the future of Andre Gomes.

Andre Gomes was well-loved in his early days at Everton, but poor form and injuries forced him far down the pecking order.

The Toffees eventually sent the midfielder out on loan to Lille last season, where he scored three times in what was a hugely successful spell in France.

Gomes initially looked set to seal a permanent move away from Goodison Park in the summer, but he ended up remaining at the club as he continued to recover from another injury setback.

Gomes finally returned to the first team in Everton’s defeat to Tottenham Hotspur before Christmas, with the 30-year-old putting on a ‘brilliant’ performance that saw him net a consolation goal late on.

Gomes was handed his first start of the campaign against Man City, before making a cameo in the 3-0 thrashing by Wolves.

The former Barcelona man has made a positive impact since returning to the squad, while he has also eased injury worries in the middle of the park.

Gomes’ contract is set to expire in the summer though, and it was previously thought that The Toffees could look to offload him for a fee this month.

However, things look very different now, and journalist Paul Brown has claimed that the club could even go as far as offering him a new deal.

Speaking to GIVEMESPORT, Brown said: “He’s going to get in minutes in some capacity I think for the rest of the season now and I don’t think that the club would be selling him in January. They can’t really afford to make the squad any weaker.

“I suppose if he puts in a few more performances like the one he did at Tottenham Hotspur, there may even be talk of trying to extend his time at Goodison Park. But I don’t think that the club would be too upset if they get another decent few months out of him and he still leaves in the summer. I think that’s probably the most you can expect out of the situation.”

Should Everton still offload Andre Gomes?

Andre Gomes is one of the highest-paid players at Everton – raking in over £112,000-per-week.

The midfielder is certainly going to play his part for the rest of the campaign, so selling him in January doesn’t really seem worth it.

Tying him down to a new deal also seems like a huge risk though. The Toffees could be committing to paying him his huge wages for at least another year, while he isn’t guaranteed to keep up the form or fitness.

Allowing him to leave for free in the summer may be the best option, even if it means not earning a fee from his exit. Moving him on from the wage books would still be a huge benefit.
