Everton exit takes one step closer after overnight development could spark transfer activity

Everton’s summer transfer business has failed to get off the ground in the opening weeks of the market.

David Moyes will be hoping for an important summer on Merseyside following Everton’s disappointing end to the 2025/26 campaign.

Both player sales and additions will be required, but the World Cup has seemingly made any transactions more difficult.

What would you be doing with Nathan Patterson this summer if you were Angus Kinnear? 👋

Surely the writing is on the wall now?

However, Nathan Patterson could now see his future decided after Scotland were all but eliminated from this summer’s tournament.

Nathan Patterson’s Everton future could soon become clear

There is an expectation that Everton will sell Patterson this summer following a frustrating season for the defender.

Patterson is already receiving interest from the likes of Sheffield United and even his former club, Rangers, are keeping tabs on his status.

Naturally, the right-back’s full focus has been on competing for Scotland at the World Cup.

Wednesday evening all but saw Scotland’s dream of making it through to the knockouts come to an end following their 3-0 defeat to Brazil.

Steve Clarke’s side have finished in third spot in their group, but their -3 goal difference is going to require something of a miracle for them to qualify as one of the best third-place finishers.

“For me, I think we’re going home,” said Clarke in his spiky post-match interview on Wednesday night.

The Scottish media were not overly impressed with Patterson against Morocco over the weekend, but the 24-year-old will likely now be able to turn his focus onto his future.

And it was another difficult outing for the right-back on Wednesday night against Brazil.

Scotland could still progress through to the final 32, but they are narrowly hanging on to their place in the eight best third-placed sides by the skin of their teeth.

The irony is Iliman Ndiaye and Idrissa Gana Gueye’s Senegal could be one of the sides to knock them out of the tournament.

Everton must find their Patterson upgrade

Although Patterson is going to be due some time away from the game to rest and recover from the 2025/26 season, he will likely be keen to resolve his next move.

Moyes has admitted he’s wanted a new right-back ever since he walked back through the doors on Merseyside in January 2025.

There is clearly no future at Finch Farm for Patterson under Moyes having played just 240 minutes of Premier League football over the last season.

In recent transfer windows, Patterson has seen his Everton exit rejected after the Toffees failed to find a replacement for him.

It is no secret that Everton are targeting a right-back addition, with the recruitment team working to find the right opportunity within their budget.

A number of names have already been discussed on Merseyside as the development with Scotland at the World Cup could well get the ball rolling.

For Patterson, a fresh start is needed as no 24-year-old should be playing as little football as he currently is under Moyes.

With one year remaining on his Everton deal, it is going to be tough for Everton to demand a significant fee for the player, but every little helps.
