Seamus Coleman made his return to the Everton squad and managed a full 90 minutes against Mansfield in the EFL Cup.
It was great to see the Toffees veteran start again at right-back, but also manage the full game.
The Irishman has been taking on a coaching role due to his age and fitness struggles, but Coleman came back with a flourish.
For the Everton captain to still be at the club after 16 years is extraordinary, but to still be putting in strong performances makes it even better.
Coleman broke a 147-year record of playing in 17 consecutive seasons, but Evertonians saw something that they found even better.

Everton fans all praise Seamus Coleman’s fitness after return vs Mansfield
It might have been a surprise to see the Irish right-back in action so soon, but with Nathan Patterson joining Sevilla, it’s clear that David Moyes will be thankful for the much-needed depth.
As seen above, the first 90 minutes since August 2024 were played by Coleman, which is some achievement for him after his injury troubles, and fans are pleased to see this.
One supporter kicked off the plaudits, saying, “Fantastic performance from Seamus. Looked really quick and sharp considering his lack of minutes,” with another agreeing: “I thought he was great, Natalie. Was pleasantly surprised to see how fit and committed he was. Last time we saw him, I thought he looked a little unfit & was concerned his days were numbered. But, I think there’s still some more left in the tank yet.”
“Pleased he was able to finish the game intact. Hope he enjoys a spell of luck with injuries,” a Toffees fan said with hope, as another added: “Coleman showing what a proper right back can give this side!”
A fan suggested that despite his age, he’s still consistent as ever: “He’s still got it,” with another claiming that his presence will be vital for Moyes: “Great to have him back for cover.”
The Everton faithful still have their belief in the club legend, and Moyes might still have some thinking to do.
Seamus Coleman proved his worth for Everton as new right-back could have competition
The need for a right-back is still as large as ever as Moyes wants two more players including this area.
But Coleman’s performances might have just sent a slight message to the Scotsman that he is feeling good and potentially ready to offer more services in his locker, and after the EFL Cup fixture, it bodes well.
| Minutes played | 90 |
| Pass accuracy % | 85% |
| Successful dribbles | 2/3 |
| Tackles won % | 3/3 (100%) |
| Interceptions | 5 |
| Aerial duels won % | 3/3 (100%) |
Although a new full-back will likely come in, the 36-year-old is still showing glimpses of his younger years and is proving that he can still do a job there.
Of course, if his fitness remains in intact, he’s showing he can be a reliable option, and a new no. two option coming in won’t have it plain sailing.
