Everton have a number of players out of contract at the end of the season.
Idrissa Gana Gueye is one of the most notable Everton first-teamers whose future remains up in the air.
As it stands, Gueye is due to walk out the doors of Finch Farm on a free transfer on June 30th, so the club have a big decision to make.
Do we all owe this man an apology after his performance against Man City? 👀
Credit where it's due, he was absolutely fantastic! 👏
Do they offer him a new one-year deal or allow him to depart and promote a younger option in the middle of the park?
With that said, we decided to ask Toffees fans on TalkingPoints what should happen with Gueye.
What would you do with Idrissa Gana Gueye this summer? 😬
He's got a one-year extension clause in his deal…
Everton fans divided on whether Idrissa Gana Gueye should stay
Replying to the TalkingPoint above, it seems Everton supporters are pretty split on whether Gueye should stay for another year.
Many make the point that the 36-year-old is showing clear signs of decline, whilst others feel his experience is too valuable to lose.
- “He’s past it now, still has his moments, but they’re few and far between. Replace him with Tim Iroegbunam, he is doing well and deserves to play more prominently in the regular squad.”
- “Gana has been a great signing twice! But I think it’s time for a younger player, Tim or Rohl maybe. I thought Friedkins wanted a younger squad?”
- “Get rid, too old now.”
- “Get rid of his legs go after 45 minutes.”
- “Strangely, he’s been putting a lot more effort recently. Amazing when contract time comes around, they start to put more effort in. Last few matches he has been a lot better. Just giving up and not chasing back was starting to annoy me.”
- “I’d keep him yeah. But definitely get him into more of a rotational role. Think reducing his workload would be smart.”
- “Keep Gueye another year for leadership and depth.”
- “Yes, you can’t replace experience.”
It has been reported that Everton are open to keeping Gueye but the veteran midfielder’s agents are in no rush to decide his future.
Other reports have suggested that the Toffees are concerned about Gueye’s substantial wages, as Capology understand he takes home around £120,000-a-week.
Surely any forthcoming contract extension would have to reduce those wages considerably, as he’s not the midfielder he once was.
The Senegal international turns 37 in September, so there could be a bigger drop off next term.
