Everton sweat as Onana suffers an injury with Belgium

The Goodison Park natives are now sweating over the availability of Amadou Onana. That is according to the Liverpool Echo, which reports that the 22-year-old has sustained an injury and has withdrawn from representing Belgium. He will now go back to Merseyside for tests.

Onana has developed a calf injury and will miss the Red Devils’ final Euro 2024 qualifier this Sunday against Azerbaijan. Domenico Tedesco had included the Everton midfielder in their squad for the current break. But he did not include him at all against Serbia on Wednesday.

Everton will fear Onana suffering a major injury with the nine-cap international an essential cog in Dyche’s side. He has started in 11 of the Blues’ 12 Premier League fixtures so far this season. Everton will also return to action at home to Manchester United on November 26.

Carragher issues a relegation verdict after Everton’s points deduction

Liverpool icon Carragher believes Everton will still avoid relegation from the Premier League this season despite their 10-point deduction. The English top-flight slapped the Toffees with the penalty having breached its financial fair play rules over the last three accounting years.

Everton registered losses of £124.5m over the three-season period ending with the 2021/22 campaign. But the Premier League only allows losses of £105m in a three-year period. So, an independent commission handed Everton a 10-point deduction that slipped them into 19th.

Dyche’s side were 14th in the Premier League table having taken four wins and two draws in 12 games this term. They now only sit above basement boys Burnley on goal difference. The Toffees are also two points from safety but Carragher doubts Everton will endure relegation.

Carragher wrote in The Telegraph: “On a dark day for Everton, here is some good news: they will stay in the Premier League this season. The club may find it hard to identify that silver lining amid the gloom of a 10-point deduction and it is understandable they will appeal.”

He continued: “There is a consolation, however. If there was ever a year to be hit with this kind of punishment, this is it. There are three teams worse than Everton who do not look capable of taking advantage of their plight.”

Everton could receive a further nine-point deduction

Everton may yet receive a further nine-point deduction after the Premier League docked the Blues 10 on Friday. That is according to the Daily Mail, which claims that the team are facing the prospect of entering administration as rival sides start to explore seeking compensation.

Burnley, Leeds United and Leicester City are all looking into seeking money from Everton for enduring relegation. The Clarets and Whites fell into the Championship in one of the terms the Toffees made losses in. While the Foxes would have survived with an earlier deduction.

The Premier League charged Everton with breaching FFP during the 2022/23 season before Leicester went down by two points to the Toffees. An independent commission now ruling that Everton owe those clubs compensation would put the Blues’ future as a club in doubt.

Prospective Everton owners 777 Partners are currently committed to buying the shares that Farhad Moshiri owns. But the consortium are not interested in paying any compensation bill that may reach as much as £300m. A verdict on any compensation would come this season.
