Everton need to lower the average age of the squad this summer.
David Moyes is known to prefer experienced players, leaning heavily on Idrissa Gueye this season at the age of 36, while James Tarkowski and Michael Keane – both 33 years of age – have made 36 and 28 Premier League starts respectively this term.
Experience can be a positive, but fans want to see younger options like Adam Aznou and Tyler Dibling afforded more chances – the latter has made just four Premier League starts this term, whereas Aznou is yet to play in the Premier League at all.
Everton’s drop-off in the second half of the campaign also serves to suggest that using the same, older players on a weekly basis is simply unsustainable.
Despite this, a story from TEAMtalk claims Everton have just opened talks to sign the 35-year-old Kieran Trippier in a deal which may not go down too well amongst the fanbase.
Everton need a transfer budget of at least _________ this summer
Fill in the blank…
Everton in talks to sign Kieran Trippier
Newcastle – who paid £12m to sign Trippier from Atletico Madrid in January 2022 – have opted to release the England international when his contract expires at the end of the season, and Everton are lurking.
The Toffees have just waved goodbye to an experienced right-back themselves as Seamus Coleman prepares for a new adventure at the age of 37.
However, instead of giving Nathan Patterson a chance to step up, or find a younger right-back option in the transfer market, Moyes is pushing to sign another old player in Trippier.
The former Tottenham defender is undoubtedly a good player, but it is the short-sightedness of this deal that has the potential to wind Everton fans up.
The likes of Brentford, Bournemouth and Brighton all seem to make smart additions for the long term, such as Michael Kayode, Alex Scott, Rayan, Eli Junior Kroupi, Dango Ouattara, Ferdi Kadioglu and Maxim De Cuyper.
All three are also set to play European football next season, and represent attractive, progressive clubs.
Where will Everton be in the table by 6pm on Sunday afternoon? 🥲
The Blues could finish as low as 14th… 😫
Contrastingly, signings like Trippier send out a message that Everton just want to stay afloat and are happy to keep on kicking the can down the road, instead of addressing a problem position by finding a suitable long-term option.
