A round-up of the latest Everton news as the Blues now hatch their plan to appeal the 10-point deduction from the Premier League for breaking financial sustainability rules.

Everton hatch a plan to appeal their 10-point deduction

The Premier League deducted Everton 10 points on Friday after its independent commission ruled in the division’s favour. It charged the Toffees with breaching FFP rules this March after the Blues registered losses of £124.5m during the most recent three-year accounting period.

Clubs can record losses of up to £105m in a three-year accounting period without the threat of any punishments. But the Goodison Park squad fell outside of the threshold between the 2019/20 and 2021/22 seasons. The 10-point deduction moved Everton to 19th in the table.

Now, though, Sky Sports News reporter Kaveh Solhekol has outlined what steps Everton are taking to appeal the 10-point deduction. He notes: “Everton had 14 days to lodge their appeal and they have already made it clear that they will be taking up that option.

“What their appeal will focus on will be trying to convince the panel that they should be allowed to make the extra £19.5m worth of deductions that they wanted to which would have prevented them from breaching the rules.”

Everton sent a new warning over the threat of paying compensation

Paul Brown has sent Everton a new warning over the threat of the Merseyside outfit having to pay Burnley, Leeds United and Leicester City compensation. The three teams are looking into any move to recoup hundreds of millions from the Blues after their 10-point deduction.

Burnley, Leeds and Leicester believe they are entitled to compensation after each endured relegation during a season Everton faced issues. Burnley fell into the Championship during the 2021/22 season, during which Everton exceeded the threshold for the losses registered.

Leeds and Leicester, on the other hand, fell out of the top-flight last term after the Premier League had charged Everton. A 10-point deduction last season would have dropped Everton below Leeds in 19th place. Leicester would have been safe after going down by two points.

“Everton would be foolish not to be worried about potential claims,” Brown said. “This has been something that’s been rumbling in the background for a long time now.

“Those three clubs have been briefing the media about their intention to do this and I’m told they will go through with the threat.”

Everton have been warned they could lose their appeal

Disgraced pundit Richard Keys has now warned Everton that they could lose any appeal over their 10-point deduction. The former Sky Sports host believes the Premier League will want the punishment to stand to establish a new benchmark. He also queries if it is that extreme.

“It’s possible the 10-point deduction will be reduced. Possible – but I’m not convinced that it will be,” Keys said in a personal blog. “Look, 10-points sounds harsh. But is it? Some pundits have been screaming that it’s ‘disproportionate’. But is it? No. It’s now the benchmark.”
