Everton scouting Primeira Liga defender as Michael Keane replacement, but there’s an issue

Everton’s squad could see a lot of changes in 2026.

It’s been a quiet start to the transfer window for the Toffees, who have not yet signed any new players.

Fans are hoping the club will spring into action soon though, because a productive window could be the difference between mid-table and Europe.

A new striker now looks less likely… how do you feel about that?

At the moment, right-back and left-back are priorities. And a new striker is also desirable, with Youssef En-Nesyri the latest target.

But Everton are also being linked with centre-backs.

And now, it’s been suggested the club are looking at a young talent emerging over in the Portuguese top-flight.

While it’s not a position that is high on the agenda for right now, Everton do need to think about landing a new central defender.

James Tarkowski is 33 and after this season, it could be that Everton will need to start phasing him out.

And Michael Keane – as good as he’s been this term – is out of contract at the end of the season.

According to TEAMtalk, Everton have made contact to sign Kevin Boma from Portuguese side Estoril.

The 10-cap Togo international has impressed this season, making 16 appearances and scoring one goal. His contributions have helped Estoril up to ninth in the table so far.

It’s stated his ‘physical strength, reliability, and ability to contribute on set pieces have not gone unnoticed’.

But there’s a potential hurdle for Everton in that, there are apparently multiple other clubs looking at him.

Several other clubs around Europe are said to have ‘requested fresh details’ about the 23-year-old.

It’s suggested that any move for Boma is more likely to happen in the summer, although a January switch is not out of the question.

Everton need fresh blood

It may not be a pressing need right now, but Everton will need to look at centre-backs in the summer. And potentially, the club may look to get ahead if the right deal presents itself.

Boma has clocked up nearly 50 appearances in the Portuguese top-flight, and has 10 caps for his country.

By several accounts he’s a player who is quite solid defensively, and potentially he could make a decent pick-up.

Keane has done really well this term but there is still a chance Everton do not extend his contract due to his age.

Certainly, some fresh blood wouldn’t go amiss.
