Everton told what they could now receive instead of points deduction

Everton have been told that there is a ‘chance’ that their point deduction could be scrapped altogether.

That’s according to Sky Sports journalist Kaveh Solhekol, who has claimed they could receive a fine or transfer ban instead.

Everton were left gobsmacked last week as they were slapped with a ten-point deduction after they were found guilty of breaching financial fair play rules, going a mere £19 million over the maximum amount a club is allowed to lose over a three-year period.

The Toffees’ only breach has forced them down into the relegation zone despite a promising run of results, however the club have already stated that they won’t just roll over.

Everton’s statement confirmed that they would be appealing the hefty point deduction and there is a positive feeling that they could be successful, with many pundits and fans debating the harsh punishment.

While football finance expert Stefan Borson previously suggested that they could fail with their appeal, Sky Sports have now claimed there is a ‘chance’ that they might not even receive a point deduction at all.

Writing for Sky Sports on Monday, Solhekol said: “There is a chance that could happen [Everton receive a fine or transfer ban instead of point deduction].

“The general feeling in football seems to be that the punishment is harsh.

The new panel may come to a different decision. The appeal will be heard by a new panel of senior lawyers and financial experts and they have the power to either allow or dismiss the appeal, and vary any penalty imposed. They can change the punishment.”

Solhekol claimed that the Premier League will want the appeal process resolved before the end of the season, so it is unclear how long Everton will have this relegation threat looming over them for.

Will Man City’s position help Everton reduce their point deduction?

There is the feeling that such an extreme punishment was placed upon Everton to set a precedent and scare away any other clubs from further disobeying the rules, however they have now set themselves very high standards to meet.

If Manchester City didn’t have their own case hanging over their heads then I don’t think we would see the Toffees’ point deduction reduced quite as much, but the Premier League will know just how bad it would look if they didn’t hand the reigning champions an even bigger punishment following their 115 breaches.

There is no chance we are seeing Man City docked ten points let alone more, so it would be a surprise if Everton’s punishment wasn’t reduced.
