The transfer rumour mill is in overdrive, and Everton continue to be linked with players – especially from West Ham United.

The Hammers will play in the Championship in 2026/27 after being relegated from the Premier League, and naturally, there is talk of David Moyes raiding his former club for players.

At the moment, Everton are heavily linked with Aaron Wan-Bissaka, but there have also been mentions of Jarrod Bowen and Taty Castellanos.

Are there any players from the relegated clubs you want to see Everton go after this summer? 🤔

But there have also been links to players from Wolves and Burnley after they both dropped too.

It is not uncommon for Everton to go after players from clubs that have just been relegated, and we take a look at the last 10 additions the Toffees made.

Jack Harrison – August 2023

Everton landed Jack Harrison from Leeds United after they got relegated at the end of the 2022/23 campaign.

He joined on loan, then saw that loan extended for another season, before he headed back to Leeds United having struggled to show consistency and drawn criticism from fans.

Dwight McNeil – July 2022

Dwight McNeil came to Everton after suffering relegation with Burnley at the end of 2021/22.

The club forked out a fairly hefty £20 million for the winger, and to date he’s made 128 appearances for the club.

Having come so close to leaving Everton in January, there is a chance McNeil could depart this summer.

James Tarkowski – July 2022

After Burnley’s relegation, James Tarkowski ran down his contract at Turf Moor, allowing Everton to pick him up on a free transfer.

This signing has been highly successful for Everton, with the centre-back rarely ever missing a game and showing great consistency at the back. He will likely succeed Seamus Coleman as the club captain from next season.

Ben Godfrey – October 2020

Everton took advantage of Norwich City’s relegation in 2020, signing centre-back Ben Godfrey.

It was another big fee for a relegated player (£20 million), and he ended up having a mixed spell, being used as a utility player. That was slightly disappointing after such a promising first season, which culminated in him winning Everton’s Young Player of the Season award.

He left in 2024 to join Atalanta.

Abdoulaye Doucoure (September 2020)

After Watford’s relegation at the end of 2019/2020, Everton swooped for Abdoulaye Doucoure for about £20 million.

Doucoure enjoyed a good spell at Goodison Park, and played a key role in helping the club stave off relegation, particularly with his winning goal against Bournemouth on the final day of the 2022/23 season.

He was a player all managers liked to pick, even if he sometimes drew criticism.

Cuco Martina (July 2017)

Everton brought in Cuco Martina after he had run down his contract at Southampton, who had suffered relegation at the end of 2016/17.

Martina had played under Ronald Koeman at Southampton, with the Dutchman now at the helm at Goodison Park.

Jordan Pickford (July 2017)

Potentially Everton’s very best signing from a club that got relegated from the Premier League.

Eyebrows were raised at the time when Everton shelled out £30 million to sign Jordan Pickford from Sunderland.

But he’s gone on to have a superb career at Everton and will likely become the club’s all-time Premier League appearance-maker.

He’s had a fair bit of criticism along the way for his style and antics, but Pickford played a huge part in keeping Everton in the top-flight and has been a top signing.

Idrissa Gana Gueye (August 2016)

Speculation continues to swirl about whether Gueye will stay at Everton and prolong his second spell – the club are currently in talks with the player.

But he was brought in for the first time back in the summer of 2016 when Aston Villa went down.

Everton triggered his release clause of just over £7 million to land him, and this would prove to be an absolute bargain.

Very few midfielders that Everton have had can match Gueye in terms of energy and tenacity, and he’s without doubt one of the Toffees’ best pick-ups from a relegated club.

Maarten Stekelenburg (June 2016)

Everton picked up Maarten Stekelenburg from relegated Fulham in the summer of 2016.

He was Ronald Koeman’s first signing, and made 26 appearances for the club, keeping six clean sheets.

He barely played after the club signed Pickford the following summer, and left in 2020.

Phil Jagielka (June 2007)

Everton won a three-way transfer battle to sign Phil Jagielka in 2007, beating the likes of Bolton Wanderers and Wigan Athletic to the defender’s signature.

He had been relegated with Sheffield United, but had impressed enough to spark interest.

Everton signed him for about £4 million, and that proved to be a total bargain.

Jagielka went on to become a club legend, making 385 appearances for the club, and established superb partnerships with the likes of Joleon Lescott, Sylvain Distin and John Stones.
