Everton have finally announced the first of their pre-season friendlies for this summer.

It has been confirmed that Everton will face Newcastle United in August at Murrayfield in Edinburgh, Scotland.

David Moyes will be returning to his home nation as the Blues take on Premier League opposition on 12 August.

Although a trip north of the border may seem appealing, there are a number of factors which the organisers have got completely wrong.

Everton vs Newcastle friendly details highlight real issues

Ticketmaster leaked Everton’s friendly against Newcastle last week through setting up the ticket sale page for the event.

Although supporters had an idea the news was coming, the details of the event may frustrate some on Merseyside.

Firstly, adult tickets for the game are coming in at £35 for what is a friendly between the two sides.

Everton have already raised their season ticket prices ahead of next season, which will already have some supporters struggling to attend games.

Speaking to Everton News, finance expert Adam Williams has shared his thoughts on the prices revealed in the announcement.

“£35 does sound like a lot. I imagine that the prices will have been set by the promoter, who will have paid Everton and Newcastle a flat fee to stage the match at Murrayfield rather than giving them a cut of ticket sales,” said Williams.

“That’s usually how these things work. So while they might have had some input into the price, I doubt Everton will have set it themselves. The promoters, TEG Sport, are a massive company and organise hundreds of these events annually. They are very commercially successful.

“A lot of research and data goes into pricing and they must feel that they can sell enough tickets at that price point to justify it. Their only calculation is about extracting as much money as they possibly can, unfortunately.”

The other potential issue to come from the announcement is that the game is taking place during the week on a Wednesday evening.

Although it may be the school holidays, scheduling a friendly during the week is asking a lot for people to drop their responsibilities to attend the fixture.

The 2026/27 Premier League season does not start until the following weekend [22 August], which leaves the opportunity for the club to host a final friendly at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
