Sue Smith heaped praise on James Garner after his opening goal against Aston Villa tonight.

Speaking on Sky Sports News, the pundit hailed Garner’s finish as ‘fantastic’ as he netted his first goal since joining Everton over a year ago.

While expected to feature in his natural central midfield position following his move from Manchester United, lack of squad depth has meant that Garner has been forced out wide.

While initially taking Seamus Coleman’s place in defence, the 22-year-old has been pushed forward this season and found himself back in the middle against Villa before making an instant impact.

Speaking on his opener, Smith said: “It’s James Garner with the goal and it’s good play from Everton. They’re pressing high.

“It falls to Dominic Calvert-Lewin, great header back to Onana and it’s a great ball through and a brilliant first touch from Garner. Fantastic finish.”

Garner played a key role in Everton’s comfortable victory in their Carabao Cup match against Aston Villa on Wednesday, contributing much more than just the goal.

The midfielder topped the tally for the most dribbles completed (3) and tackles won (6) as the Toffees enjoyed back to back wins, with Villa putting an a very poor display on their home turf.

The return to full fitness for Jack Harrison could mean Garner will now finally get a run in a more central position, with the former taking his place on the wing to make his debut after joining Everton on loan.

Garner will be eager to continue his impressive form as Sean Dyche’s side host Luton Town this weekend, with the Hatters still waiting on their own first three points in the Premier League.
