Finance expert now thinks he’s spotted something promising for Everton and the Friedkin Group

Everton’s relationship with PSR has been a chequered one, although there are few Premier League clubs who really enjoy this particular set of rules.

After all, it only really serves the bigger teams, with their unlimited commercial revenue allowing them to spend as freely as they desire.

Meanwhile, clubs like the Toffees, Newcastle United and Aston Villa have all been forced to sell to fund any progression or stability despite all having vastly wealthy owners.

Fortunately though, after so many years of torment, there could be a financial light at the end of the tunnel for Evertonians.

Kieran Maguire offers update on Everton’s PSR situation

Speaking to iNews, football finance expert Kieran Maguire must be tired of answering questions about Everton’s fiscal position.

After all, the Toffees have been consistently embroiled in turmoil for years now, with deductions and PSR threats unrelenting.

However, at last his comments on the Toffees can turn a little more positive, given Kevin Thelwell’s success in steering them towards greater sustainability, and Dan Friedkin’s imminent Everton takeover.

So, when asked what the future holds for this rejuvenated club, Maguire replied: ‘In 2023-24 PSR was challenging for Everton but I suspect the club feel that they, along with half a dozen other clubs who were in a similar position in the summer, have stayed the right side of the line.

‘Even with new owners coming in, January is going to be tight because the problem with a big overspend over two successive accounting periods is that it creates a big hangover, which has been the problem at Everton. There are signs that is passing but not yet.

‘So I think they have got to be careful when it comes to spending rather than going big and they will know that. There are some outstanding debt issues and really it is about getting through the next period and getting to Bramley-Moore Dock as a Premier League club where commercial revenue can be significantly increased and things look brighter.’

What positions do Everton need to improve in January?

If Dan Friedkin is to take over before January, and seeks to make a statement with a few big signings, there are a number of positions that need particular work.

Naturally, both full-back areas will spring to the mind of most Evertonians, given how bare they have been this season.

If Vitaliy Mykolenko is unavailable, there is no natural left-back to fill in, whilst Seamus Coleman and Nathan Patterson both boast unreliable injury records.

Ashley Young, at 39 years of age, cannot be relied upon week in and week out at this level.

Then, moving further up the pitch, and another winger wouldn’t go amiss given they currently only have Iliman Ndiaye as their sole permanent player for that role.

Both Jack Harrison and Jesper Lindstrom are on loan, and thus will leave next summer.

And, with Dominic Calvert-Lewin yet to sign a new Everton contract, perhaps splashing the cash on a new long-term striker, in preparation for his departure, might make sense too.
