Former Everton midfielder Amadou Onana had a game to forget last night.

Amadou Onana started in Belgium’s drab score draw against Egypt on Monday evening, partnering in midfield with Youri Tielemans.

Onana, who left Everton to join Aston Villa in a £50m deal two years ago, really struggled both on and off the ball.

Which Everton player are you expecting to have the best World Cup? 🏆

In fact, the 24-year-old was given a 3/10 match rating by one international media outlet, and his in-game statistics certainly reflect that.

Former Everton star Amadou Onana was awful for Belgium vs Egypt

Onana was heavily criticised by the media last night, and here’s what GOAL had to say about his performance in Seattle.

3/10 – “An anonymous display from the Aston Villa man, who was hauled off before the hour mark after failing miserably to impose himself on the game.”

The former Toffees star lost the ball a whopping seven times and looked really uncomfortable in possession.

Looking back, Farhad Moshiri and his chiefs did well to command a £50m fee for Onana, as he’s not really kicked on at Villa.

Most supporters would argue he wouldn’t get into the current midfield, as James Garner and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall offer far more poise and quality on the ball.

In fact, Garner was actually wanted by Aston Villa before he penned a new contract, so even Unai Emery was looking to potentially upgrade on Onana.

To his defence, he’s still only 24-years-old, so there’s plenty of room to grow and develop into a more complete midfielder.
