Paul Merson predicts whether David Moyes will win his first game back at Everton against Aston Villa

Everton are back in Premier League action on Wednesday, and David Moyes has the chance to get off to the perfect start.

Moyes takes the team for the first time in his second spell in charge, and will be counting on the Goodison Park faithful to help inspire him and the team to victory.

The Friedkin Group appointed Moyes on Saturday after planting ways with Sean Dyche days before.

Dyche had ‘given up’ in the eyes of The Friedkin Group, prompting the new owners to act decisively. Initially, they were backing him.

Moyes will need backing by TFG this month if he’s to make this a successful move. Moyes is certainly hopeful The Friedkin Group will land him some new signings.

Everton have been woeful so far this season, and the Scot not only needs new faces, but he needs underperforming players to come good again.

Villa will be a tough game, and pundit Paul Merson has now made his prediction for the game.

Currently, Everton are on a terrible run in the Premier League.

While the recent draws against Arsenal, Chelsea and Manchester City were seen as respectable, it’s actually just one win in the last 11 games in the Premier League.

And concerningly, Everton have not scored a goal in eight of those last 11 games.

The situation has been bleak.

But the arrival of Moyes offers new hope for fans, and a win against Villa tomorrow night would do wonders for confidence and morale in the dressing room.

But Merson doesn’t foresee that happening, believing Villa will spoil Moyes’ homecoming.

Predicting a 1-0 win for the visitors, he told Sportskeeda: “I believe Everton are in trouble this season because nothing much changes with this appointment. Dyche made them hard to beat, but when you look at Ipswich and Leicester, they are still scoring more goals and playing better than Everton despite the results.

“If they got rid of Dyche and went for something different, I would understand. But they have gone with someone very similar in Moyes. Aston Villa win for me!”

David Moyes’ record vs Aston Villa

So Moyes kicks off his second spell at Everton with a game against Villa and frankly, it’s not an ideal first match for him.

These days Villa are a great side under the stewardship of Unai Emery, and are hoping to push for the Champions League finishes, while actually being in the competition itself this season.

David Moyes’ all-time record against Aston Villa
Games managed – 34
Wins – 13
Draws – 14
Losses – 7

Moyes has been around a long time in management and has faced Villa no less than 34 times in his career.

He has a fairly decent record against the Villans, winning 13 times, drawing 14 and losing just seven.

In his first stint at Everton, Moyes faced Villa 23 times. He won six, drew 11 and lost five.
