Everton had their sights set on Europe for most of the season.

But, David Moyes’ side have ultimately fallen short as they’ve ended the campaign in 13th place.

Everton have completely collapsed since the 3-0 win against Chelsea back in March, failing to pick up another three points since then.

That was a disgraceful performance from Everton… something has to change! 😤

Speaking after the Toffees’ 1-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur yesterday, James Garner has pinpointed why they’ve failed to qualify for Europe.

James Garner says the Everton defence has shipped too many goals

Speaking to the Liverpool Echo, Garner believes the key reason for the underwhelming league finish has been the leaky defence.

“I think what’s let us down, perhaps over the course of the season because it’s easy to look at the last seven games because it’s been the most recent, is that we’ve let far too many goals in,” the Everton midfielder stated.

“It’s literally the obvious but we need to keep the ball out of the back of the net.

“This season we’ve done much better scoring goals, but we need to keep more clean sheets and be a lot more solid going into the new season.”

Everton need a transfer budget of at least _________ this summer

Garner did also note that it’s been a season of progression and there are positives to take into next season.

“It’s definitely been a progressive season, a better season than we’ve had over the last four or five years.

“Six or seven games ago, we were talking about maybe having a European run. I think if the games had gone differently and a couple of games we were even leading but we’ve lost points, so it could have been a lot different season if we’d had picked up points over these last seven games.

“There’s definitely been an improvement and definitely something we can be positive about going into next season.”

The focus now shifts towards the summer transfer window, which opens in exactly 21 days time.

Moyes and his recruitment chiefs have been drawing up a shortlist of targets over the last few months in preparation.
