Jamie Carragher thinks Everton boss David Moyes made a huge transfer mistake over the summer

Everton’s summer transfer window saw them add some real talent into their ranks under David Moyes – but the Scot has been told that there was one huge mistake he made over the off-season.

Everton signed Jack Grealish from Manchester City on loan in one of the ‘coup’ deals of the entire summer transfer window, and by further adding the likes of Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall, Thierno Barry and Tyler Dibling, Everton appear to be set with a blend of talent, potential and experience for the coming years.

However, it wasn’t all sunshine and rainbows for David Moyes, who had to choose wisely as to which players he would let go at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

And, after his recent run of form, Jamie Carragher has stated that it was a huge mistake to get rid of Dominic Calvert-Lewin with the Leeds United striker scoring his fourth goal in as many games for the Whites.

Jamie Carragher left with no doubt that Dominic Calvert-Lewin exit has stifled Everton

Everton waved goodbye to Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the summer transfer window after nine years of service on Merseyside.

It is fair to say that he didn’t perform as well as he could have for the Toffees in his final few years at the club, only scoring 12 Premier League goals across his final three seasons – including a measly three-goal haul in his final campaign.

But having burst into form at Leeds United, pundit Jamie Carragher believes that David Moyes will be ruing his departure – stating that Calvert-Lewin is ‘without doubt’ better than Thierno Barry and Beto, who currently make up Everton’s current striking options.

What did you make of Thierno Barry’s display vs Chelsea?

Carragher told Sky Sports after Leeds’ draw with Brentford on Sunday: “I think Everton will be rueing letting Calvert-Lewin leave, yeah.

“Listen, I can understand it from both parties’ point of view.

“His new [Everton] deal was probably less money, having missed so many games through injury. I have absolutely no doubt about it, Calvert-Lewin is a better centre-forward than what Everton have right now.”

Calvert-Lewin has won Leeds fans over with four goals in four games, and he is the best English striker on current form in the entire Premier League at present.

Everton still made the right move to get rid of Dominic Calvert-Lewin in the summer

Everton were right to get rid of Dominic Calvert-Lewin at the time, make no mistake.

Whilst the Englishman had done exceptionally well under Carlo Ancelotti, including a 16-goal haul in the 2020-21 season, those goals did dry up due to injury woes at Goodison Park.

After watching this goal from Evan Ferguson, who would be your dream January striker signing? 🤔

He certainly put on a show against Celtic!

It will hurt Everton fans to see Calvert-Lewin performing well. Former Toffees star Pat Nevin stated that Everton will be reeling over Calvert-Lewin’s superb form at Elland Road at present due to Barry and Beto’s lack of firepower.

But hindsight is a wonderful thing – and with Calvert-Lewin only scoring one goal under David Moyes, in the Scot’s first win of his second spell at Everton, you can understand why he let him go.
