Everton will probably regret the sale of Ademola Lookman each day that goes by.

It’s astonishing that the Toffees were able to let go of Lookman for a fee as low as £11 million in 2019.

Now, the Nigerian is the best African player in the world and has been a revelation for Atalanta over in Bergamo.

With his past at Everton behind him, the winger is now looking at his next step, as there have even been talks of Liverpool signing Lookman.

But it won’t be Arne Slot’s side who will benefit from his success, instead a certain Champions League finalist are in hot pursuit of the 27-year-old, as former Director of Football Marcel Brands will be baffled as to why he sold him.

Marcel Brands will be in shock at the news of former Everton player Ademola Lookman

As soon as Lookman departed Goodison Park, it wasn’t a smooth-sailing transition to where he is now.

The Nigerian struggled to properly kick on at RB Leipzig and was loaned out to Fulham, where many will know his famous penalty for the wrong reasons.

Nevertheless, the winger bounced back and secured a move to Atalanta, where he is widely known for his hat-trick performance in the 23/24 Europa League final against Bayer Leverkusen.

This led to Lookman finishing in the Ballon d’Or top 20 and now shows why Inter Milan are after the forward.

Fabrizio Romano has confirmed that Inter have informed Atalanta over a £36m bid for the 27-year-old, but Lookman’s side are looking for somewhere in the region of £43m.

What Brands has said on Lookman’s Everton departure

It’s safe to say Lookman’s overall sale was a critical mistake, and to now see his price rise by over £30m is something that Brands will scratch his head at.

But despite his error in letting a young Lookman leave the Premier League when he already had such promise, it wasn’t all down to the Dutchman.

Lookman has improved by playing consistently, which is something he wasn’t getting under Marco Silva in 2019.

Because of this, he left, and speaking at Everton’s general meeting in 2020, Brands explained how this came about.

“We also tried to add some leadership and experience in the dressing room to this younger squad, and in attack, we had to sell some players, for example, Lookman, we didn’t get him happy in our environment, and we had to sign a new striker.”

Although Brands was a big factor in making his exit happen, he can’t be solely to blame, but he will now be in shock that Inter are pursuing a transfer which could exceed the £40m mark.
