Everton are assessing the transfer market for a new midfielder at the moment.

David Moyes’ focus appears to be on strengthening the middle of the park, and bids have already been submitted for Middlesbrough’s Hayden Hackney.

Everton’s latest bid was believed to be worth £15m for Hackney, but the Championship promotion-hopefuls have knocked it back.

It seems as though the Toffees may have pivoted their attention to a Premier League star whom Marco Silva has been somewhat critical of.

Marco Silva has been critical of Everton target Sander Berge

It emerged on Monday that Everton have registered their interest in Sander Berge.

The Fulham midfielder is reportedly open to leaving Craven Cottage this summer after Silva’s departure to Benfica.

Berge, who joined in a £25m deal two summers ago, is already in ongoing talks over a potential exit.

Speaking last season, Silva actually came out publicly and demanded the Toffees target to improve going forward.

“He has to be more decisive, more angry, to have an impact in both ends.

“And he has to improve in the offensive end, because if you are involved in all the corners, in all the free kicks, you have to be much more and to have much more impact. A player with his size and with this capacity has to be much more.

“In open play, we are demanding from him to shoot much more from the edge of the box, to be in it, to arrive in areas that he should arrive, because he has the conditions to do it.

“If you see Sander in the training ground, he has the capacity for long-range shots. I’m pushing him, giving confidence to be there, to set up himself in positions where he can have an impact.”

Whilst there is an element of praise in there, it should be somewhat concerning to hear for Everton’s recruitment chiefs.

To really progress to the next level as a team, the Toffees need to sign a ready-made midfielder who can contribute in the final third as well as defensively.
