Everton are after strengthening this summer and Myles Lewis-Skelly has been linked, but a change in his fortunes surely makes any move unlikely.

The Toffees are facing a big summer.

European football is still an outside possibility. But it’s now looking like the Toffees will narrowly miss out.

While that would be a shame, Everton would still have had a good season and are arguably where they need to be since The Friedkin Group took over.

But to reach the next level, several new recruits will be needed.

And in recent weeks Lewis-Skelly has been tipped as a potential signing for the Toffees, amid a lack of game time.

But the youngster’s situation has changed lately, and it makes a move to Everton unlikely.

There was a point a couple of months ago where Lewis-Skelly’s future at Arsenal was in considerable doubt.

He wasn’t playing, and there was talk that Arsenal could let him go this summer.

Everton were said to be tracking Lewis-Skelly back in November, amid criticism of Vitalii Mykolenko.

Everton fans welcomed the rumour about Lewis-Skelly, believing him to be the kind of signing the club need to make this summer.

But any summer move by Everton for this player now looks unlikely – because Lewis-Skelly appears to have turned a corner at the Emirates Stadium.

He’s now had a couple of full 90 minutes across Arsenal’s last four Premier League games, and he came in for a lot of praise for his outing against Fulham at the weekend, which saw him play in midfield.

He was then rewarded by Mikel Arteta with a start in midfield last night against Atletico Madrid in the second leg Champions League semi-final. And he was one of the standout performers in the high-stakes match.

Football.london rated him 8/10, saying: “Wanted the ball all the time in the middle, and found himself often inside the box, playing a great crossed ball driven into a dangerous area, but without anyone to tap it in.

“He always wanted the ball from his teammates and was willing to make stuff happen, a great showing on the biggest of stages.”

Arteta said of him after the game: “No, it wasn’t the intention. I don’t know why we provoked an opponent. It wasn’t. It’s just the feeling.

“And I think I’ve been tough on him. and he’s been very, very persistent and consistent in his behaviours and in the manner that he’s been knocking on the door constantly to earn the right to play. I think he deserves it and that’s why he played.”

Lewis-Skelly would make a tremendous signing for Everton, given his versatility and potential.

But it seems he’s now made a breakthrough again at Arsenal and his emergence as a genuine midfield option will surely see the Gunners bat away any approaches for their young talent this summer.

Admittedly a move to Everton was probably always going to be difficult for Toffees officials to pull off.

But now he’s rising to prominence again, it really does look like it’ll be a non-starter.
