Newcastle United now showing fresh interest in Everton’s £60m star

Everton’s financial malpractice has arguably been one of the most documented stories in the last year, given just how outlandish the outcome was.

To see such a giant of the English game, and one of the founders of English top-flight football hit with a ten-point deduction was shocking, especially given the scale of the punishment when compared to the actual crime.

A mere £19m overspend outside of the Premier League’s profit and sustainability rules marks a minor grievance for the harsh verdict, and as such protests are in order.

However, reports have now begun circulating suggesting that numerous rivals might be set to prey on the unrest surrounding Goodison Park, tempting away the key men who are arguably too good to remain tied to a relegation-battling side.

One such example is Dominic Calvert-Lewin, who TEAMtalk has now outlined as a potential target for Newcastle United.

Given they have already snagged Anthony Gordon from the Toffees back in January, and have shown interest in both Amadou Onana and Jarrad Branthwaite, it seems the Magpies have taken a liking to the Merseyside club.

However, they could be put off by the £60m valuation slapped on the 26-year-old just last year, as Everton plan to ‘fight to hold on to the player’.

How good is Dominic Calvert-Lewin?

To outline how good Calvert-Lewin has been for his club is merely to showcase their struggles without his presence.

After all, it should come as little surprise that in the two campaigns where the Englishman has been consistently ravaged with injuries, they nearly fell to relegation.

In the years beforehand he had been slowly building into a top-level Premier League striker, with exceptional back-to-back seasons highlighting that growth.

Having scored 15 during the 2019/20 season, he would add to that with a further 26 goal contributions across all competitions the next term to cement his rise to the top.

However, disaster would strike in the years that followed, with a string of unfortunate ailments that were severely mismanaged by the various bosses. In an effort to rush the star striker back, his recovery was only lengthened.

Only since Sean Dyche’s measured approach has he been allowed to truly return, with Everton having risen to 14th, eight points clear of the drop, before their ten-point deduction last Friday.

Calvert-Lewin is imperative to everything good that the Toffees do, so to lose him would certainly be a hammer blow no matter the fee received.
