Juventus are now considering a surprise move for Andre Gomes.

That’s according to Calciomercato, who have reported that the Italian giants see Gomes as a potential replacement for Paul Pogba.

Everton signed the Portuguese midfielder permanently for £22 million in 2019, however injuries and poor form have left him struggling to earn himself a place back in the starting line-up.

Gomes enjoyed a successful loan spell with Lille last season and he was fully expected to leave the club in the summer, whether it be a return to France or a switch to interested clubs in Saudi Arabia and Turkey.

However, Gomes remained at Goodison Park past the deadline and is now waiting on his first appearance of the campaign as he recovers from a calf injury.

Sean Dyche is reportedly eager to bring Gomes back into the team rather than wasting his hefty salary on the bench, though he could instead consider offloading the 30-year-old in January before his contract ends.

Calciomercato have claimed that Juventus will look to snap Gomes up in a bargain deal as Everton will want to avoid losing him for free in the summer.

Gomes’ stint with Lille caught the eye of Massimiliano Allegri’s side, who are desperate to bolster their midfield due to Paul Pogba’s absence. The Frenchman is facing a significant ban from football after failing a drugs test last month.

Juve could be tempted by Gomes if they can get him on the cheap, though recent reports have also heavily linked them with a move for Tottenham Hotspur’s Pierre-Emile Hojbjerg.

Gomes’ exit makes sense for Everton

Andre Gomes is a very good player at his best and has often been praised for his performances at Everton, with Kevin Campbell previously claiming he had been ‘excellent’ under Frank Lampard.

However, the midfielder is extremely unlikely to extend his contract beyond next summer and so it makes sense to earn some sort of fee and also shift his huge wages off the books.

Everton could really benefit with the extra cash from his exit and could bring in a younger, more reliable replacement in January.
