Everton could soon see their two Senegal internationals heading home after another defeat at the World Cup.

Iliman Ndiaye and Idrissa Gana Gueye’s World Cup could come to an end later this week after they suffered another defeat on Monday evening.

It has not been the best of starts to the World Cup for Everton’s representatives, with Nathan Patterson also facing an early exit.

However, there is something even more concerning for the Toffees when it comes to what is being said about Gueye after Monday’s loss to Norway.

Senegalese media slam Everton midfielder Idrissa Gana Gueye after Norway loss

Senegal are on the brink of World Cup elimination unless they can handsomely beat Iraq and qualify as one of the top third-placed finishers.

Gueye started the game against Norway on Monday evening in New Jersey, but the verdict on his performance was not a positive one.

“Clearly lacking match fitness, he didn’t have his usual impact in midfield. He was the one who lost possession leading to Norway’s second goal,” said Seneweb.

“But he was also the one who set up Mane, who flicked the ball on to Ismaila Sarr for the Lions’ first goal.”

Gueye is yet to agree to Everton’s contract extension offer, with the Blues left sweating over what his camp are going to decide.

At the age of 36, Gueye is naturally going to experience some physical limitations, but it is apparent he is feeling them at this stage in the season.

It is believed that the Blues are trying to sign another midfielder this summer, with Everton locked in talks over Hayden Hackney.

There is no denying how good a servant Gueye has for the Toffees, but there may be some questions over how much he still has to offer.

Earlier in the season, there were major concerns over Gueye’s fitness following his return from the Africa Cup of Nations.

The latest verdict from the Senegalese media may well suggest that – if Everton are to retain Gueye – the midfielder’s workload may have to be managed over the summer and into the new term.
