Everton are actively looking at a number of potential signings this January transfer window.

Over the last few months, leading up to January, Everton have been drawing up a long list of transfer targets.

It’s understood that David Moyes wants three new signings, which include a striker, midfielder and full-back.

Arsenal’s Ben White is one of the latest to be linked to the Toffees, whilst former Brentford striker Ivan Toney has been tipped to join for months.

But, despite that, there hasn’t been any concrete movement up to now, and no deals appear to be advanced.

That said, Sky Sports have now provided an update on the club’s transfer plans.

Everton could wait until AFCON is over to sign players

Sky Sports journalist Lyall Thomas has explained that Everton are among the clubs that are reluctant to do business until their players are back from the Africa Cup of Nations.

“One of the major factors in the way of business so far has been the Africa Cup of Nations. Clubs have been very reluctant to trade while they have players away at the tournament.

“There are also more than 60 players still at AFCON from across the other top European leagues too, which is also impacting those clubs’ ability to make any changes, in or out.

Everton have made contact to sign Tiago Gabriel… do we need a centre-back? 🧐

“These clubs do not want to deplete their squads any further, especially at such a busy time of the year, with at least two games per week recently, and they cannot guarantee those players come back from AFCON fit.”

Thomas continued: “Clubs in upper-to-mid-table such as Brentford, Newcastle, Everton, Sunderland and Brighton are all open to doing business but are in no urgent need, with their seasons on a good footing. They can take their time to do the right thing.

“This week is likely to get busier as players return and the AFCON semi-finals play out. After the final next week, everyone can take stock of what they have at their disposal and look to make more concrete decisions in the market.”

Everton are eagerly awaiting the return of Iliman Ndiaye and Idrissa Gana Gueye

Everton have two players at AFCON in Iliman Ndiaye and Idrissa Gana Gueye, who both play for one of the favourites, Senegal.

They’ve helped their nation reach the semi-finals of the tournament, which takes place on Wednesday against Egypt.

So, if Senegal were to lose, Everton’s transfer business could ramp up as they may then be able to move players on to increase their budget.

Beto has been linked to Fenerbahce, and Dwight McNeil is of interest to Nottingham Forest, so perhaps they’d be allowed to depart, helping to facilitate incomings.

A telling couple of weeks lie ahead on Merseyside.
