Wayne Rooney has shared his very honest thoughts ahead of Everton’s trip to Liverpool for the first Merseyside Derby of the season.

David Moyes has been able to steady the ship since he made the return to the club back in January, but he was unable to win his last trip to Anfield.

This season has seen a new look Everton take to the pitch, with seven points propping the Toffees up in sixth spot after the opening four games.

However, their toughest test is set to come on Saturday in the Merseyside Derby.

Virgil van Dijk has warned Everton of Liverpool’s set piece threat, on the back of his late winner against Atletico Madrid on Wednesday night.

But this is an Everton side which has conceded fewer goals than Liverpool in the league this season.

And Rooney has spoken about the positive feeling around the club heading into the game at Anfield on Saturday.

Wayne Rooney shares his expectations for Liverpool vs Everton

Legendary midfielder Peter Reid believes Everton can test Liverpool on Saturday following their disrupted week through European involvement.

It will be a test for the Blues, who have shown some promising signs this season, but not against any of the big six yet.

Speaking on The Wayne Rooney Show, the former Everton striker has suggested the Toffees are going into the game with a lot of confidence behind them.

“I think obviously the new stadium has helped with that and I think the big thing is David Moyes coming back,” said Rooney.

“He’s come back. He knows the club. He knows the culture of the football club and then I think the signings have been really good. They look dangerous now, Everton, going forward with Grealish and Alcaraz they look really dangerous going forward, Everton, and solid as well at the back.

“So yeah, I think Everton can go there and get something. They have to be at their best and defend as a unit and be hard to beat. But Moyes’ teams normally do do that.

“Hopefully we can get the three points. Take a draw. Take a draw.”

Rooney has spent a lot of time with Jack Grealish recently, and it is clear that the England legend believes the 30-year-old could be key to Everton taking something from the game.

Although he did not have a great record in Merseyside Derbies himself, it is clear that Rooney feels this is a different Everton side to what Moyes inherited last season.

Everton eyeing first Anfield win in four years

It has been four years since Everton last clinched three points at Anfield, with Richarlison finding himself on the scoresheet that day.

Everton fans may feel this is their best opportunity in years, despite the way in which Liverpool have started the season.

Grealish is the Premier League’s most in-form player, and Moyes has added plenty of quality to his squad elsewhere over the summer.

No one will expect it to be easy for the Toffees, but Everton are proving a lot of pundits wrong this season.

Robbie Fowler expects Liverpool to beat Everton with ease on Saturday, which should only be adding fuel to the fire for Moyes and co.
