Why Everton could lose up to £18m in final few weeks of the Premier League season

Everton had to win against Sunderland to keep their European hopes alive heading into the final game of the season.

But, David Moyes’ side were well beaten by Sunderland, as they shipped three second-half goals to lose 3-1 at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton fans have called for Angus Kinnear to sack David Moyes, with many frustrated with the Scotsman’s stubbornness.

What would you say to Angus Kinnear after THAT loss to Sunderland? 😤

Something has to change… 😭

Moyes certainly has to take accountability for the run of six games without a win at such a crucial stage of the season.

In fact, the Everton manager may have lost the club up to £18m in recent weeks.

Everton could lose up to £18m in merit payments

Every place in the Premier League is worth £3m, so there’s a big incentive financially to finish as high as possible in the league table.

When the Toffees were leading Sunderland 1-0 yesterday, they were actually eighth and not far from seventh, remarkably.

However, defeat now means that they’re languishing in 12th, and they could still finish in 14th place if they lose to Tottenham Hotspur on the final day and other results go against them.

If that were to happen, the club would have lost £18m in merit payments, which would no doubt impact the transfer budget this summer.

On a more positive note, there is still a chance that they could finish as high as ninth, but they’ll need to go away to Spurs and win.

If Moyes’ men can secure victory, they’d move on to 52 points, which would be four more points than they managed last season.

So, you’d have to say that it’s been a step in the right direction, even though they did spend a record-breaking £97m net last summer.
