Why Everton shouldn’t fall into the romance of re-signing Richarlison

Everton should look at other striking options away from Tottenham Hotspur’s Richarlison this January transfer window.

Since leaving Everton during the summer of 2022, Richarlison has been linked with a return to Merseyside.

Richarlison received a great reception from Everton fans on the weekend and was seen signing autographs with Toffees supporters at full-time.

Richarlison then fueled speculation of a return by reposting a video with the caption: “Come home, Richy.”

But, despite the growing possibility of a sensational transfer in January, Everton should stay clear and sign a different centre-forward.

Richarlison’s goal scoring record is worrying and Everton can do better

Although it would be a really exciting transfer, the idea of re-signing Richarlison is probably better than the reality.

This is a striker who has scored just eight goals since the beginning of the 2024/25 season. To put that into perspective, Beto has a better goalscoring record.

Richarlison’s injury record also doesn’t make for great reading, as he missed 12 games with a calf injury and 19 with a hamstring issue last season.

According to Capology, the 28-year-old earns up to £130,000-a-week, so the transfer would require a huge financial commitment from Everton, too.

Everton should try to sign Ivan Toney instead

Signing Ivan Toney would be a much better use of funds, as he has a good injury record and is historically a more prolific striker.

It’s understood that Toney is on Moyes’ radar, with the Scotsman tracking him dating back to his Peterborough United days.

The transfer could suit both parties as the seven-cap England international will be desperate to get himself back into Thomas Tuchel’s plans ahead of the World Cup.

The former Brentford striker has netted 10 goals in 14 games for Al-Ahli this season, which follows a 30-goal campaign last year.

Manchester United frontman Joshua Zirkzee has also been linked with a move to Everton.
