Everton have made a decent start to the new Premier League season.

David Moyes‘ side currently reside in ninth place after their 1-1 draw against West Ham United at the Hill Dickinson Stadium last night.

David Moyes has aspirations to return Everton to Europe, and he doubled down on that in the programme notes yesterday.

There are areas that need to improve if that goal is to be realised, and already, work is going on behind the scenes ahead of the January transfer window.

With that said, there is one signing Moyes is desperate to make.

Everton working on signing a right-back this January

Darren Bent said Jake O’Brien looked out of place against West Ham United on Monday night as the defender struggled against Crysencio Summerville and Malick Diouf.

O’Brien, who is a centre-back by trade, is still being played out of position as a right-back, although that could change in January.

According to TEAMtalk, Everton chiefs are already working on signing a right-back ahead of the winter transfer window.

Moyes tried to sign Barcelona full-back Hector Fort in the summer, but that deal failed to materialise. Kenny Tete and Kyle Walker-Peters were also wanted.

It’s understood if the Toffees do sign a right-back, Nathan Patterson would likely be moved on at some stage next year.

Everton could reignite interest in Juanlu Sanchez

Moyes did consider Juanlu Sanchez in August, but he ended up staying put at La Liga outfit Sevilla.

TEAMtalk reports that the Spaniard could re-emerge as a target for Moyes and his recruitment team, though they haven’t identified a top target yet.

As for O’Brien’s future, Moyes has always envisioned him moving back towards his favoured role as a centre-back.

Given his age, the Republic of Ireland international would likely be the long-term partner to Jarrad Branthwaite.
